Question about Chevrolet Cavalier

1 Answer

You can hear the starter kick out but doesn't start. Took starter and battery to auto part store and tested fine. What else could cause this? Starter relay maybe?

Where is the starter relay on a 1995 Mitsubishi Mighty Max PU

It sounds more like you have a bad connection somewhere or possibly a weak battery.

Starter problems are very common on these V-8 engines, even though it may test good on the bench it doersn't mean it's going to work in the engine everytime since the becch test doesn't have the load of turning the engine, I would not trust this starter in this case because of all the work involved in removing it again.

Thank you for using Fixya.

Hi. If you can hear a click (quite loud) from the engine compartment, but the starter won't crank, this also usually caused by discharged battery; since you already recharged the battery then the starter solenoid, starter cables or the starter motor itself could be a problem.

All the best!

While attempting to start the car I get a "click" like a dead battery. On the second attempt the car starts right up.

Get the battery checked at any auto supply store first to measure it's cold cranking amps. Usually, in my personal experience, it's the starter on it's way out. I even took out my starter and had it tested and it tested fine. I put it back in and nothing. Convinced, I replaced it, end of problem.

Honda accord will not start at all i hear is a clicking sound headlights and everything else seems to be working

The clicking you hear is made by the starter solenoid.
First check the connections to the battery for corrosion and make sure they are tight. Otherwise this is usually caused by a low battery or a battery that can no longer take a load. You may have enough power for your other systems to work but the amps required by the starter are far higher than any of the other systems.
The battery can be load tested by most auto parts stores for about $10. If the battery is fine the next step is checking the cables to the starter for breaks or corrosion. lastly the starter solenoid or starter could be faulty.

Take it to another auto parts store, like my favorite - Auto Zone, for battery and alternator check!
Describe clank?
Does it crank....blum,blum,blum then kick in?
Clank,clank,clank then kick in?

Bad starter? & how to replace it?

A good place to start is to remove the starter itself and take it to an auto parts store where they can test it and you will know for sure that the starter is good or bad. If indeed the starter is not working right you will have to buy and install a new one or rebuilt one but most auto parts stores will also do a core charge. Pretty much exchange the old one for a new one and it doesnt cost as much.

It does indeed sound like it is a starter problem but then I only have 1 yr of schooling on engines but I was best in my class and I do most of my own work. So Im 90% you dont need the timing belt changed. However, if the starter checks out the smoke could be from a different problem. And seeing as how you mentioned the timing belt, there is a possibility that one of the pullies that hold that belt might be stuck. This would cause smoking and the car not starting. Just check it out by process of elimination.

I hope this helped.
