We have a 98 cavalier 4 speed automatic and according to the owner's manual, there is no dipstick to check amount. What is the best way to check the transmission fluid level without going to a dealership?

There should be, either on the left or right of motor, all the way in the back like under your windsheild wipers under the hood. RED handle. If you find it, always check tran fluid WHILE RUNNING.

How do you check the transmission fluid in a 1998 chevy cavalier. there is no dipstick

you are wrong darcblod,in a 98 model chev.cav.the 2.2 engine is an automatic that was not made with a dipstick.it has instead a "check valve" there is a plug on the side ..remove it and pour your tranny fluid into the "fill" hole until the fluid just barely runs out of the "plug hole" ,replace both the fill cap and check valve plug and you'll be fine...it is important that your car is level and at operating temp......fyi some of the newer fords are like that too.

TYPE OF TRANSMISSION FLUID NEEDED FOR 97 CHEVY CAVALIER AND HOW MUCH

You can use Dexron II or Dexron III, but you can also use the improved Dexron VI which replaces both the afore mentioned fluids. Use Dexron VI as it is an improvment. Caution: Do not overfill. Check fluid level according to the instructions in your owner's manual and make sure the car is parked on a level surface or you will get a false reading.

I have a 1997 Chevy Cavalier. It doesn't have a dipstick to check the transmission fluid level. Is there another way to check this?

There's a fill plug on the right side of the unit that works just like the ones on stickshift transmission...fill on level ground 'till fluid just spills from plug opening.

How do you check for proper fluid level in the transmission of a 1998 chevy cavalier

Actually your car has no transmission dipstick...

There is a red fill cap on the transmission bell housing under the brake master cylinder. You'll have to look real hard to see it. There is also a bolt on the passenger side of the transmission that you remove to check the level.

You have to fill the oil from the fill cap until it runs out of the bolt hole. Don't ask me why GM did this on a lot of their cars...

I found this after a little research, I don't own any GM products so it came as a surprise to me.

Hope it helps
