This will need verification but I have seen this exactly once in over 30 years. What I believe is happening is that the computer is sending a signal to fire a spark plug at random on it's own. (never found out why but replaced the unit with one from a scrapyard and it never happened again.)
Try putting it in neutral with the brake on and wheels blocked, key off. and standing on the side (not in front) watch the engine and see what happens. Then do the same thing with it in park with key out. DO NOT STAND IN FRONT, and keep your hands out of the engine compartment while doing that.
If the engine "bumps" and you don't hear the starter engage, it's likely I'm right!
