If the engine light is not on will the computer pick up codes

Yes, you can get codes without the light being on. They are in a History and although the light may have gone off *(SOFT CODES) then they are still in the history.

Changed o2 sensor engine light went off but came back on

I don't know if you have reset the computer but if not take one battery terminal off for about 5 minutes and that will reset your computer. If you don't have anymore problems it should not come back on.

How do you reset computer codes on 2001 auror

The only way I know of is with a scanner. I have heard that you can take the battery cables off and leave them off for several minutes then turn the key on and off several times after you put them back on (I don't know if this works or not). If you don't fix the problem that caused it the check engine light will come right back on. Please rate my answer so I get points awarded for it.

Chevy Cavalier 91 - Dashboard symbol "check" lite

Some fault code is stored in the PCM (computer); to know what is the problem, I suggest scanned the PCM with some scanner reader codes. Autozone or AutoShop with this tools sometimes make this for free.

Hope this helps.

The ECM or computer needs a reflash done to it. The code is for the EVAP system. Takes over a hour to check the EVAP system and to reprogram the computer. Then the idle speeds need to be relearn. I know, I work on them. Don
