Question about 1999 Honda Passport

1 Answer

I am having a hesitation or stumble when taking off in either reverse or drive. I hear what appears to be exhaust noise when accelerating and to top it off my gas mileage has dropped wayyyyy down to almost 12 miles a gallon. I have replaced spark plugs, no issues with ignition coils or intake manifold gasket. I have reached the point where I can't diagnose any further. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Probably a clogged catalytic converter.. a telltale sign is soot or black streaks on the outside of converter. Testing these things is a little hairy . Best bring it in and they will know what to do.

Would this problem also cause the engine to be hard to start? I recently replaced the starter so I know that is not an issue. It is especially hard to start when the vehicle has been sitting for a while and has cooled off but it will crank right up after turning it off and then starting it within a few minutes.

sounds like engine need some cuddle :) I mean, first thing to do is to check engine compression ratio. If that is ok, then make sure carb adjustments are correct and all fuel lines ar clean. Good luck!

A rattling noise has suddenly appeared

Hi Graham,
I think you should look at the heat shields often attached to the exhaust, sometimes when at idle they can vibrate and rattle and make a hell of a racket. Have your mechanic take a look at these it shouldn't cost very much if that is the problem

- stumbles when stopped and accelerating at low speeds

ENGINE HESITATES WHILE ACCELERATION
LOSS OF ACCELERATION

It can be fuel pressure issue or it's the problem with accelerator pedal or its clogged filters causing there.
There are many other possibilities. I suggest you to go through the list of help links mentioned below, these will help you to confirm where the actual fault lies: -------

Accelerated from a stop and heard a loud bang coming from rear of jeep and then it wouldn;t go anywhere i put it in reverse and then it moved forward i have a 1985 cj7

Distributor shifted on you and timing is out of phase. turn the distributor about 1/4 inch counter clockwise with your hands and test drive it . if it improves you have a busted bolt on the core (not uncommon for an old CJ) .. may need to tighten bolt or drill out a new thread and put a tight bolt in . When you are out of phase, it sounds like you have an exhaust problem , loud noise in exhaust and no compression nor acceleration , except in lower (high rev) gears. jorge diaz

My 1999 Lincoln Navigator is making a rattling noise while in reverse. Do you know what may be causing this?

Try taking a look at your exhaust system. This is most likely the noise. You only hear the noise in reverse and not normal operating.
