Question about Honda Accord

1 Answer

I have a 1996 Honda Accord anniversary edition and the engine runs hot. After a while the thermostat needle goes above the white line and goes close to the red. I have to turn the heat on high in the car so it the needle goes down a little. It has a brand new thermostat at 195 degree's and the coolant is full. Why is it running hot like that? What are the ramifications if the needle goes above the white line?

Hi. What criculation on the vehicle is not doing good. Check your vehicle's water pump. This could be the problem. To check if water circulation is doing fine, start the engine coming from cold start and open the radiator cap. You will see there that water should be running inside the radiator. If water is not circulating, then there is something wrong with the water pump or the radiator itself.

Engine gets hot

There are 3 potential problems:
--faulty thermostat. If it is not opening all the way by the time the engine reaches 160-180 deg F...then coolant is not flowing enough.
--partially blocked radiator caused by build up of rust over the years if never flushed as regular maintenance.
--Insufficient coolant to water ratio. Should be at least 30% or more coolant in the radiator.
--Or combination of above.
Hope this helps.

you likely have a stuck thermostat.........when they stick open the engine wont reach operating temp and when they stick closed the engine will over heat...........your cheapest and most likely place to start is with replacing the thermostat

Do you I need to replace the thermostat on my 1999 Honda Accord as a preventative measure only?

No only if you have noticed a change in engine running temperature on gauge, colder or hotter than normal.
