Glow plug light stays on, engine turns over but won't start

The diagram in my haynes manual does not show some parts that are in my 2001 jetta tdi 1.9 turbo. i ran a diognostic and it says glow plug curcuit a malfunction, i changed the plugs and tested the coolant...


In addition to the 4 primary glow plugs, the cooling system also has 3 Coolant Glow Plugs to help provide extra heat to the cooling system in order to warm-up the vehicle's interior more quickly, and enhance overall engine warm-up time. (Example - Some Mercedes diesel engines use electrical heaters in the cabin because their engine is so thermally efficient.)
Likewise, this auxiliary source of heat from the 3 Coolant Glow Plugs is necessary because of the VW 1.9 TDI engines outstanding efficiency, which wastes very little heat.


The 3 Auxiliary Coolant Glow Plugs are located at the end of the aluminum cylinder head (in a protruding flange) directly below the vacuum (brake booster) pump, which also connects to a coolant hose.

The 3 Auxiliary Coolant Glow Plugs use two (underhood) relays which are monitored and controlled by the ECU. During a cold start, the vehicle's interior temperature selector switch helps the ECU choose one of three modes depending on the amount of heat required to warm-up the coolant.

For example, Coolant Glow Plug #1 can be selected to operate all by itself, or #2 and #3 can operate together as a two-some, or lastly, all three glow plugs can form a triple source of heat for maximum enhancement of engine warm-up time.

After the engine is completely warmed up and the thermostat is open, the Coolant Glow Plugs normally shut-off and remain off unless the (thermally efficent) engine cools down sufficiently to have the computer signal them to come back on to keep the engine and cabin air warm. Extensive idling times at stop lights or in the driveway are scenarios where these glow plugs are most likely to recycle on and off.

In conclusion, the period of Preglow and Afterglow is determined by the engine's coolant temperature (during a cold or hot start), which helps the ECU select a predetermined time-cycle for the combustion chamber and / or Auxiliary Coolant Glow Plugs to follow.

Finally, one myth that needs to be immediately debunked, is the belief that the TDI's advanced Glow Plug System is linked to the opening of the driver's side door, which is false! It is also noteworthy to mention that some earlier VW diesel glow plug systems were operated in this manner, but not so with the advanced VW Jetta 1.9 TDI engine.

I have a 2000 Jetta diesel. Can you tell me where the plug for the block heater is? If indeed there is one.

My diesel santa wont start.Ive had computer diagnostic done and have been told that the diesel has to be under pressure (250 bar) at point of injection but im only getting around 70 bar. The injectors were...


have you had the glow plugs checked or replaced? the engine light'wait to start is not a joke. it means the engine glow plugs need time to heat the cylinders to max. heat to fire the engine to start. if you use either or strting fluid to start the engine in cold weather,be careful,the motor will get addicted to the starting fluid. sounds like you've not waited on the wait to start light goes off before cranking the engine.replace the glow plugs 1st and then wait before the wait to start light goes off! it's a common mistake.however the cost of glow plug replacement will be a constant reminder to wait to start. glow plugs cost about $100.00 plus labor.been there myself!! you can start engine easily in a/m with either or regular starting fluid, but please take this to heart,it's easier to replace glow plugs,than engine you can use starting fluid by spraying into the air intake of motor once,twice, but from there on,you're on your own! thank you for choosing fixya.com

2002 F250 7.3 wont start below 40 degrees


will try to help. your engine glow plugs are most likely the problem, when youcycle the key on, it says wait to start on dash panel right? it means it, the glow plugs preheat the cylinder to fire the fuel when it turns over. you should heva an electrical plug under the front part of engine , the plugin heats the oil during cold weather to insure a smoother start for the motor. i do suggest you use anti-gel in your fuel and please follow the instructions on the bottle that you can purchase at any auto parts store. replace your glow plugs[ they are easy to replace] they are located above the cylinders almost like spark plugs in a gasoline engine. only smallet in size. if you are mechanically inclined and can replace spark plugs in a v8 motor, you can do this yourself, but be prepaired to pay $100.00 for the glow plugs and i also suggest that after replacement, you wait for the wait to start light goes off on dash before you attempt to start the engine. it's a very common mistake. hope this helps and thank you for choosing fixya.com if this helps a 4thumbs up would be great

Car wont start diesel engine Could it be the 'glow plug'? what is a glow plug? how can i test?


A glow plug is a small heating element in the cylinder. It heats the diesel so that starting can be made easy. Is your car standing in the open frozen parking If yes, then it would require a lot of battery power to first heat all the cylinders and then turn the engine to start. What we do in such conditions is to light up some fire under the car and heat the fuel system enough for the diesel to warm up a little and thus save the battery for glow plugs. Generally, all vehicles have an indicator light which comes on when the glow plugs are ready for starting. The diesel will ignite on compression, but it has to reach the cylinder and thus has to be flowing. In cold it freezes and hence the need for glow plugs and the heat. If it is parked in heated parking then the need for glow plugs decreases.

I have a 1998 1.8 diesel van, once its running its ok, but getting it started can be difficult (esp in cold/damp) Have you got any tips for starting, does this model have a heater plug, if so what symbol...


Sounds like the glow plugs are frazzled. There is one electrical wire going to a plug, then each plug is connected in sequence. The glow plugs are heating devices used to get the fuel up to temperature before ignition.

They are fiddly to replace, but are relatively inexpensive and the most common source of issues with cold-starting diesel engines (first thing to fail).

Some cars had a 'pre-heat' available with glow plugs, where you simply turn the key part-way to 'on' and you would see a glow plug light come on (looks a bit like a picture of a spring). If you see this light on your van, you can turn the key to turn on the glow plugs and they will pre-heat your engine slightly and make starting easier

Heater plugs for nissan terrano 2

I have change the glow plug relay its brand new bt i didnt change the glow plug will that cause it not to start


The operatoin of the glow plugs heat up the combuston chamber before turning over the engine. ONce the fuel hits the combustoin chamber , The fuel will ignite.

The diesel engine only runs on air and fuel .

The glow plugs are basically a resistor that heats up the combustion chamber or pre combustion chamber.

So if the glow plugs are getting power now that the relay is change out , Yes the glow plugs have a major roll in starting the engne.
