Question about GMC Sierra 1500

4 Answers

1999 GMC Sierra 4WD - 5.3V8 Auto The 4 wheel drive is not working - (Auto push button type) I raised the vehicle on jackstands to see if the 4wd would engage. When all 4 wheels are off the ground the 4wd engages and all the wheels spin. But when I lowered the front wheels back to the ground, just the back tires spin and the driveline from the transfer case does not spin. Finally got to the GM dealer for the transfer case fluid - i was surprised, it helped. So 1 problem down - now it engages 4 low, 4 high - but front axle isn't getting the power to the wheels - so i'm thinking something is up with the front diff?

Hi,

The most common problem with this is the clutch packs in the transfer case, they sound like like are not locking up the front diffs properly and may need to be adjusted or replaced.

You need to do a pressure test of the fluid transfer section to ensure that there is the correct pressure to engage the clutch packs then if thats ok start to look at adjusting these.

Let me know if you need more infromation.

Thanks

Jason

    Yes,
You need to remove the transmission and then dismantle the transmission.

Before suspecting bad front differential check up if the transfer case gives power to the front differential driveline even it engages 4 low and 4 high. Could be a sliping transmission problem in upstream of front differential. Only after you will be sure that the power is present from transfer case to the driveline front differential you will proceed to front differential repairing.

I have a 2003 GMC it has two buttons to use 4 wheel drive as most all do with push button controls...One is for standard highway driving with 4 wheel drive the other is for 4 wheel drive a low speeds for off road driving and conditions that need low speed less spin driving..not designed for highway use..and must be stopped to engage where 4 speed highway can be shifted on the go..hope this answers your question..good luck..

How do I use the 4 wheel drive on my GMC Yukon 2004. What dash button turns the 4 wheel drive on?

Hi, depending on the vehicle, there can be different controls. Standard control, 4hi, use in slippery conditions, never on dry pavement. Just push the button, and it will engage. 4low is for extreme conditons and the transmission must be in neuteral to engage 4lo. If you have auto 4wd button, just press the button in slippery conditions. If you have a denali, it is all wheel drive, and there are no buttons to push. So, depending on the model, there are multiple ways, but pushing the button engages it. Good luck...Goop
