Question about 1983 Jeep CJ7

2 Answers

I am looking at buying an '83 CJ7. It has the 258 4.2L engine. It needs a lot of work. All the interior is stripped out, the tub is in good shape with minimal rust - less than my '95 wrangler has, The guy wants $2800 OBO for it... Is it worth it? By bear minimum interior i mean the dash and stick shift are in there and the front two seats, but half the bolts are loose on the seats... !Matt!

I wouldn't pay more than $500 for the vehicle.

I really don't think it is worth $2800.Not in that condition.Yes you can upholster the seats or whatever, but you are going to have to go all over searching for parts.Sounds like you are in a kinda snowy place...not too bad.But the parts for it that you will be searching for have taken all the elements for years.I am not sure what exactly all the interior stripped out is,I can't really interpret it by that, but it doesn't sound very good.Does it run?I guess you would have made sure of that already?Yes technically it is an antique, but you should check out what these things are worth,at least in a blue book.I just looked at kelley blue book online. It only went back to 1990.There was no cj-7 so I did a 2 door cherokee.Used in excellent shape retailed for $1,640 if that helps. Also,I am guessing it's a stick shift so you have to wonder about the clutch or transmission condition if it's been sitting around not running.A clutch is at least $500.Don't even talk about a tranny, that's why I always buy a stick.I would offer him $100.If he says no say okay $101,final offer.
I hope that 'enlightened' you.Good luck! Greg

I'm changing out a 2.8v6 out of an88 s10 blazer to a1993 4.3 vortec I stripped everything out of the 1993 it had been rolled how much of the wiring out Of 93 do iI need do I need to change all wiring

You need the help of a good auto electrician because the new engine will have all sorts of sensors, switches and things to make it fire up electrically that may not have been on the old engine. Only a long look at the two vehicle wiring diagrams will sort this out.

You\'ra asking about a 22 year old vehicle. I wouldn\'t take that for free & certainly not pay for it. Get something newer. Any vehicle over 12 to 14 years old, isn\'t even worth working on, unless you have decades of experience & do all your own work.
If you know nothing about cars, you need something fairly new.

I have a 1983 cadillac coupe deville with about 81,000 miles on the engine. car runs great but burns oil. any suggestions?

The only options you really have are. Have the top end rebuilt for new valve stem seals. Or try the syrup in a bottle you by from a local store, which I don't suggest using. But a lot of people use this stuff and it's basically a thick weighted oil and over time isn't good for the engine. With it being an 83 Cadillac, I would have the original engine rebuilt because these original parts are hard to come buy. Good Luck

Changing a Timing Belt

at 150,000 miles pretty much everything could be worn out if it is all original, if the van is in really good shape no dents or bad dings paint good, interior is in really good shape and the van has been serviced on a regular basis then yes fix it, also this is a free wheeling engine so if the timing belt breaks there is no damage to the engine, if it ran good with no excess oil useage or engine noise fix it..

I have a honda crv that supposedly needs a new head gasket. (last time I drove it, a few days after having fuel line replaced) i pulled into the parking lot with smoke coming out of engine and a horrible...

Most Hondas with mileage like yours are worth fixing if the body and interior are still in good shape. Look up your book value on Kelly Blue Book.com Then a get some prices on the head work or even a used engine.

What do you reccomend....

Only thing I did not see on your list is radiator hoses and serpentine drivebelt. I usually replace those and keep them for "on the road spares" Good luck with new car!!

That is a very hard part to source. Have you tried the www.mr2oc.com forum? it is the best place to look. I have an 85 mr2 with black interior. Definitely a lot harder with 88 and 89 as there were alot fewer made those years.
Thanks,
Lee

Broken passenger door handle

Same problem. I have a 2000 Suzuki Esteem GL. A year ago the driver's door handle broke. Heard a sound and then it was loose. Could not open it from outside. Had to open front passenger door, open the driver's door from inside and then go out again to enter from the driver's door. FRUSTRATING. My mechanic had to take the door apart to fix it. Just a week ago, my front passenger door died on me. Can't open it from outside nor inside. The door won't open. This is such a stupid problem that costs lots to repair. Never will buy a Suzuki again. Had too many problems with it (had to fix gas tank, doors that won't open, front axle...).

Buying 2001 RX300 65,000 miles extra clean

If you aren't mechanical, have someone who is check the car out. Specifically, the transmission fluid for color and smell (On toyota's they are to be changed every 30K miles, few drivers do this), and pull the spark plugs to see if they all appear relatively clean (a burnt looking plug indicates an engine problem). Ask to see the maintenance records. Oil should be changed every 3-4,000 miles if regular oil, 8-10,000 if synthetic.

The next BIG thing regarding maintenance is timing belt and water pump at 90,000 miles. Expect 500-700 for this, not at the lexus dealer. Probably double at the lexus dealer.

I would be interested under 12,000. Very interested under 10,000.

FYI, I'm driving a 95 ES300 with 170,000 miles and it runs like a top. These cars require very little in the way of repair if they are maintained. My goal is 300,000 just to see if it can be done. Unfortunately, I drive a total of 1,000 miles a month these days. So it will be a while. On the interior, you can have very nice new leather seats installed if the rest of the interior is in reasonable shape. Cost around $1,000 or a little less.

Good luck!!
