My 1986 2.3 trooper wil not blow hot or cold. Is it the reistor? Where is it?

sounds like engine pressure is entering the cooling jacket from either a bad gasket or a cracked casting..unless the water pump is bad..

Try flushing or blowing high pressure air through the heater core lines. its sludge build up and need to be flushed through heater core only. check antifreeze fluid level. only put in straight antifreeze, do not mix. most people do not know what mixture should be, so be safe and add straight, it will not hurt it, i run 100% straight antifreeze and never had a problem or worry about it ever freezing and cracking my block, heads or radiator cracking.

check to see if the valve on the heater hose moves when heat is adjusted cold to hot. you may be able to hear coolant moving through the heater core if the valve opens. good luck. hope this helps.

check the fuses for the fan. could be a blown fan motor, bad switch...or maybe water heater core bad, hot water valve bad, disconnected heater lines in the engine compartment... all possiblitlies

HOT or just not cold. first thing is to verify that the refridgerent level is ok, if its low it will do that , second, if one of the air door actuators is bad it wil do that, but check refridegerent level first .

add coolant....if that doesnt work...check the thermostat...then if its not that its the water pump

The heater in your car depends upon a flow of hot coolant going through the heater core in order to get hot air into the car. If the heater core is partially plugged, it will restrict the flow. If you have a head gasket that is putting exhaust into the cooling system, it will eventually get into the heater core. When this happens there is no coolant in the heater core to make the air warm. If the water pump vanes have corroded away the result will be very poor coolant circulation causing the heater to not blow hot air. If your car is equipped with a heater control valve that is not functioning properly, the coolant flow will be restricted. One or a combination of these factors is likely the culprit in your case.
if the car is not overheating, the thermostat is working fine.... replace or flush the heater core multiple times to try and eliminate sediment build-up.

I've a 1986 Trooper and the radiator drain has yet to be found.

With the engine cold drain the water via the lower hose. Reconnect the hose then add water run the engine until warm to hot, opening the thermostat. Turn engine off and pull the hose again to drain the water again it should still be dirty as in rust. you may have to repeat a few times, when the water drains clear then put antifreeze and top off with water. Be sure the hose is clamped tight and no leaks.
