Question about 1992 Mitsubishi 3000GT

4 Answers

I just bought an used 1992 Mitsubishi 3000GT Non Turbo version, it seems people has manipulated some wiring, I had the cramshaft bearings replaced since it was making noices, in the same process I had the oil pump replaced and also the cilider rings (no resurface of any kind in the cilynders), the problem is when the engine has been running for a while on hot weather and traffic, the engine start failing erratically when I press the throttle, it looks like when the spark plug wires fail (they are new), the mechanic said he had to replace one of the three ignition coils (don't know which one) and the wiring for the ignition transistor, particulary for the 4 pin conector looks messy (pin 3 is cut). I need orientation to troubleshoot the failing component since there are so many posibilities. The tachometer is not working neither and I know it is connected somewhere the ignition system. As long as the vehicle has not built high temperature due to traffic jam, it runs fine, failure will go away temporarily if I stop the engine for a while and then continue (did a 160 miles trip and I had to stop three times)

Sorry I'm not a mechanic, as an electronic engineer I'm able to read de maintenance manual and follow some diagrams but that's it, please explain with easier terms what could be causing the engine failure due to high temperature (or else).

Hello, is the MFA the one located between the air filter and the big hose going to the intake of the engine?, do you have a part number for ordering?

Ok thanks, and how about the fail when temperature builds up due to standing by in traffic jam or running in highway for a while at a constant acceleration, it feels like the engines loses power (no power to the spark plugs I asume) intermitenly and erratically, if I shut off the engine for about 5 minutes it will go normally for a while and them come back, last time it happened I was going up on a hill, there was some slow traffic going up, (no more than 10 mph), then when there was no traffic and tried to pick up some speed there was the failure, I had to park aside the road, turn off the engine, wait 10 minutes and then start again, when a reached the top of the hill and temperature outside was about 65 F, road was mostly flat with curves picked up some speed, the fail minimized. Comning down the hill there was no problem ever. Regards.

Hi! Its certainly is a MAF (mass air flow) sensor failure that's why when you press the throttle it resists to run. The MAF has big contribution on engine performance specially on the idling and vacuum supply. Once replaced you'll be good. Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa!

Yes that's the MAF. I'll get back to you as soon as I got the part number.

Good news bad news...

Good news...I just finished a customers 300gt project with similar concerns and the end result required a new camshaft sensor However, to attempt the project I needed to order the OEM manuals @ $300

Bad news... is the customer paid for them and only agreed to buy them if he got to keep them

also FYI... it took 3 aftermarket CMP's before I got a good one

the CKP (crankshaft sensor) and CMP (camshaft sensor) send a a/c signal to the vehicle computer based on crankshaft and camshaft position, typically less than 5 volts

as heat builds from the engine the heat is transferred to everything including the sensors and wires. as the sensors and wires heat up they expand
this is an engineered fact and parts are build with these facts in mind

however, when a part fails, like the sensor, the heat expansion cause an intermittent "open" due to the expansion

an open is where the part losses the ability to conduct/pass electrons

    hope this helps

Thanks a lot this is a lot better, now is this something that an expert mechanic should replace or it can be replaced at home? can you provide part number and qty for ordering? I have the service manuals for this vehicle, are they of any use for this procedure?

first... do you have the OEM service manual or just Hynes/Chilton
second...very easy job, just plug and play

It says Backup Service Manual, 3000GT, 1992-1996, Volumes 1 and 2, from Mitsubishi, it is not Hynes/Chilton.

Might well have to replace vss. First, try unplugging connector and clear using electrical contact cleaner to see if this helps. Fill socket with dielectric grease to keep moisture out.

94 Mitsubishi 3000gt non turbo where is the wiper motor relay

Why not pick up a Haynes car manual for your 3000GT at your local auto parts store. It will have the whole wiring schematic for your car in it. I believe that there isn't any relay, only a positional switch which may be your problem.

It might simply be your slave cylinder or slave master cylinder that's bad and leaking. They cost a hellofalot less than an entire clutch replacement, that you are about to do. Have those two items checked first.

Crankshaft bearings replacement

Does the engine knock? Low oil pressure? Why does it need bearings. If the bearings are bad and you don't remove the crankshaft to have it turned, you will be doing this job more than once. no fun

Engine shuts off

I have a 1991 Dodge Stealth RT Twin Turbo and had this exact same problem, it started off as a slight flutter, like i was loosing fuel pressure, then it soon after began completely shutting off like yours.. turns out I fixed it by replacing all 3 ignition coils. and now it runs like a charm.... give that a try. i got mine at auto-zone for around 60 dollars a piece, and there are 3 total.
