Question about Ford Bronco

I recently had an emissions test done on my '90 Ford Bronco, it passed all areas except the HC level. The HC limit is 400ppm @ an idle, the first test my reading was 1812, the shop that tested said that if I tuned it up and fixed the vaccum leaks I had it should take care of the problem. After new spark plugs, replaced plug wires(some were bad), filters, the vaccum lines were brittle and kept breaking so they were replaced. I went back in to have the it tested again and the HC reading was 5343. In order to pass this test I have to get the reading down to 400. Any suggestions to get my HC level down? The engine is a 302,(5.0 ltr)

A few suggestions that can help a fresh oil change.I have seen dirty oil peg out the gas analyzer 9999 HC. Replacing the PCV valve if the valve is stuck open all the time it is pulling oil into the intake side of the engine and into the combustion chamber. Hope this helps.

I have a 1994 chevy silverado c1500 v/6 4.3 litre and failed smog for high hc levels st idle . what should i do before i take it back to try and smog? ive already done complete tune up.


as long as you have no check engine light on change oil, air filter. pep boys sells a product called guaranteed to pass add to fuel make sure car is hot when you go back for emission test cold car has high hc levels it also helps to post the hc level you tested at and the limit on your receipt hope this helps

you should not have to worry about it with the age of your car. nothing is wrong take it somewhere else to be tested

My 92 GMC 5.7L truck failed Wa State idle emission test HC limit of 220 with 320 reading at 680 rpm,,,,However, It passed cruise emmision at less than 50% of limit.... How do I lower the HC at idle? Is...


I would go to the pharmacy and buy a half gallon of 75% or better isoprople alcohal the run the vehicle to almost empty,then add the alcohal and put just a few gallons of high test in it then drive to your testing station and get tested again after engine is warm.Afterwords go and fill it with more gas.Remember the more alcohal the betterbut no more than a gallon the the mix.It worked for me in ct with a 79 muscle car malibu and my numbers were of the charts.

possible but could be head gasket or valves , or worn rings and is by passing the pistons going straight out the end ...or maby settings are wrong ? try carb cleaner and inspect visually air-filter etc.

Failed emissions test


Hi Don,

First, thank you for asking me for my input on this. It just so happens, that I used to own a Ford ranger that had the same engine as yours. It was a 1990, but there are few changes to these model years.

Anyway, there is only one reason that your HC levels would be high. Your engine has WAY too much unburned fuel in the exhaust. The same reason applies to high CO levels. Too much fuel and/or not enough air.

Below is a link that you may find very helpful. It explains exactly what we are talking about here and also lists some of the possible causes.

EMISSIONS ANALYSIS

Incidently, when I had the same emissions failure on my truck, replacing the air filter and replacing a failed MAP sensor fixed it. - I did NOT have to replace the catalytic converter. If the numbers are as high as you listed above, you will only destroy a new converter anyway because there is obviously not enough oxygen in your exhaust system for the catalyst to function properly. Those numbers are nearly DOUBLE the allowable maximum. If the engine is running correctly and the catalyst is good, your numbers will be WAY BELOW those maximum numbers.

have you had the the engine codes pulled and reset?
and if so what are your engine codes?
i dont know of any car that will pass emissions test with the engine light on.
we cure your trouble that caused your engine light to come on and you will pass your test.

Emissions level HC (PPM) too high in truck. How to fix?


Do an oil change with 20W50 oil (or one grade higher) to prevent blow by during the test.

You current oil has HC from blow by though the rings.

Do a fresh oil change will lower the HC.

========
Change spark plugs,wires,cap and rotor if they are over 24,000 miles
========

Make the smog check appointment for the EARLY MORNING. Colder air will help the fuel burn better.

========

Clean or change the air filter and pcv valve.

Clean Mass Air Flow sensor with CRC Mass Air flow cleaner or electronic part cleaner.

========

Do a quick wipe down on the wires and cap to take the moisture off.

========

Check spark plug wire contacts for corrosion.

========

Fill the tank to around 3/4.......just in case your fuel pump is weak.

========

Ran the truck for 20+ minutes on highway before the test.

========

Do not carry excessive cargo on the truck bed.


These are the little things I would do to get the HC and CO down.
