There are two areas to check for this problem. The fuel and the spark. There is a Timer for your Glowplugs and you should hear clicking and notice the lights dimming in Synch with the clicking. This should work with your "Start" lamp in the dash.

Test one or two Glowplug wires with a Testlight and see what kind of Spark you have. If the spark is present you need to pull about half of your Glowplugs, if not all, and Test them with Battery voltage. They should be uniform in glowing and be careful not to melt them. Any Glowplug that remains cold or sluggish should be replaced. If no Spark, then check the Timer or replace it. Some models may have a Relay, check with Autozone or Oreillys or similar for parts listing.

The Glowplugs start a cold engine. In a warm engine, the Timer will not engage at a certain temperature. Engine compression will ignite the Ether if the Glowplugs do not work, but compression will not ignite a cold diesel engine.

Fuel, if you have a bleeddown in the fuel system the pump may be weak or there is a hole in the line or bad "O" rings. The Ether simply gets the engine turning fast enough to siphon the fuel and draw it back to the pump. A shop can pressure check the fuel system for leaks or use a "smoker machine" for difficult to find leaks.

I hope this helps and you are happy with the info I provided.

after 1300 dollars and still no fix. Starts only with either hot, cold, rain, or shine. Stall when coming to a stop like it runs outta fuel and gotta get the either out

Hello, When you had your truck in the shop, the mechanic should have pressure tested the fuel system. You also have a Vacuum pump on the pulley system and the Vacuum reservoir can sometimes rust out on the bottom of the cannister. If you use the vacuum line going to the Reservoir and create vacuum with a pump or lungs, you will be able to detect a leak in that part. It seems like you are losing the draft in the induction system, and if you have a Vacuum servo on the Cruise control, the leaks will kick the truck out of Cruise.
If no problems detected there, then check the Electric wires to the Injector pump. Unfortunately you can't pick a spot for the truck to stall, but it would be beneficial to you to know if the Diesel fuel filter was full or empty. Then you would know if you really are running out of fuel. Fordexpert

Only have a few more ideas, like checking the base idle speed, ignition switch and/or ignition relay, fuel line integrity. The diesel engine has an ability to run by compression and the glowplugs only help the initial start. Again, finding out if the fuel filter is dry when it stalls would be a big help.

You may be able to get a chassis wiring diagram through Autozone.com by registering with their site for free. Not sure if diesel power is shown, so be careful in trusting info. Maybe your run circuit for the ignition is partial bad resulting in the loss of your fuel supply. Since the diesel will run without spark perhaps the other important things in the electric circuits are cutting out? The kill side of your ignition circuit is clearly working or you could not shut off the engine.

Have fuel tanks been cleaned? For fuel line integrity, most Radiator shops can test for air leaks in the fueltank or on the truck. Last thought would be any crankshaft sensors or oil pressure sensors tied to a safety shutdown to protect the engine. Since oil pressure drops when decellerating and oil pressure must build at startups, a safety sensor could kill the engine run circuit or fuel supply.

Why does it start on ether but will not run without it?

Because it is not getting any fuel! as soon as the ether burns up if no fuel then it quits. check all fuses and relay for fuel pump. to check fuel pump to see if its running. have someone turn the key to start, while somebody is under car at fuel tank. hold hand on tank, if it works you will feel the vibration from pump. most relays for fuel pump are in under hood fuse box. a fuel pump if good, will only run a few seconds to build up pressure in line. when engine starts it runs continuously. so you may have to turn key on a few times. Good-Day!

Try spraying some ether into the air intake, then try to start. If it starts then dies, it is running off the ether and you have a fuel delivery problem. If the vehicle still won't start after trying a couple of times with ether, you are most likely having an ignition related problem.
Let us know what you find. Good luck.

Why does my idi start and die after seconds? Could be because pumps turned down to low? HELp

A possibility is that the pump may have been turned up instead of down. And it is flooding the cylinders. Or your air and fuel ratio needs re adjusted. because, your getting to much air for less fuel.

My gmc 4.3 stalls when warm and wont start without ether. then it runs fine

I had the exact problem with my 1993 chevy c1500. I found that the IAC was sticking so the engine would die at idle after warming up and the ignition module was pulsing the ECM intermittently after the engine warmed up so the fuel pump wasn't being turned on after the engine died....I replaced the ignition module and the IAC valve and all is good. I don't know if testing the ignition module reveals that it isn't sending pulses to the ECM.

1994 intrepid starts runs until warm then cuts off wont start until cools off

Chances are its something electrical, but thats a big list.
You'll have to rule out a few things and check for spark and fuel pressure when it won't start.

Had friend put OBD diagnostics to it and error code indicated fuel pump ????? No code indicates replacing any part . Indicates testing ! pressure and flow testing , voltage drop testing the electrical circuit etc... There is a check valve in the fuel pump assembly that is suppose to keep pressure in the fuel lines an fuel rail . When the check valve goes bad allows fuel to drain back into the tank. Try turn the key on an off a few times to build up pressure . The PCM energizes the fuel pump relay for two seconds at key on .

To fix the high idle, replace the top oxygen sensor. I would drop the transmission pan and change the transmission filter. You can then check the old fluid for contamination and metal filings. Metal filings will clog the transmission filter and lead to low pressure that would cause delayed shifts
