You can change the trans only. not easy to do w/o a lift. it is tight but can be done. sometimes faster to take them out together and sep. on the ground. tought to do in the drive way both ways. i drop just the trans.

1996 Plymouth Voyager starts in 2nd gear and never shifts regardless of how much gas I give it. The RPMs race up, but it never shifts. It is an automatic transmission with a 3.3L engine. Mechanic told me...

The valve body is a part roughly the size of a 8 X 11 piece of paper, only about 4 inches thick.
It is made of aluminum, and is really filled with lots of holes and passageways.
It is up inside your transmission oil pan.
As you drive, transmission oil is supposed to circulate inside this, and change your gears as you drive down the road.
These do fail occasionally, and are expensive to replace, often costing 1,000 to 3,000 to change, as most shops will overhaul your whole transmission in the process.
If you will type in " Ebay motors", and then type in "Plymouth valve body", you can see a picture of one.
Be blessed.

1997 grand voyager stalls in reverse

my 97 Plymouth Grand Voyager used to stall when I backed out of my driveway and would also stall comming to a stop light or stop sign. Remedied it by replacing the EGR Vacuum Valve little black round disc looking thing that attaches to the intake located just to the left of the brake fluid resevoir (three vacuum lines and an electrical connector holds it in place) Yw Kevin C. You will need to remove the whole cluster and replace it, the whole assembly just unpluges and comes out. You can buy used or new. Just remove all trim pieces and the bolts holding it in place you will have to shift your trans. into N or lower gear if automatic, also if it has ajustable stearing you will need it to be as low as possible. Buying a manuel will help you with diagrams and other useful info.

The geabox fluid needs changing, if the gear changes seem jerky changing up and down, the gearbox needs to be refurbished.

I had the same thing happen, No, I was told this is not one of the engines that allows the piston to contact the valves. I replaced the timing belt 2 years ago and had no valve problems.

1998 Chrysler Grand Voyager Automatic gear box slipping

If the fluid is full , it sounds like the trans pump is loosing prime. If it is there will be a code set. The code will not always turn on the light. Go have the codes checked. If it does have a loss of prime code in the trans computor and the fluid is full then you will need the trans pump replaced
