Question about 1985 Jeep Cherokee

1 Answer

My 2001 Jeep Cherokkee engine light has been on for a couple of years and at one point it was running very rough and I spent about 2 grand having 2 different shops work on it at that time This work (fuel injector cleaning, new plugs, etc, they also told me I needed a new alternator which I suspect that was not part of the problem) did not totally solve the problem and now it is running rough again. I will try to describe some of the symptoms. The check engine light will flash much of the time but it is usually when I am slowing down in traffic or for a stop sign or red light. Once I accelerate it will usually stop flashing but not always. If I keep driving with it flashing it will run rough. If I pull over and shut the engine off and restart it then it will stop flashing. Driving at highway speeds there is never a problem and it seems to run fun. The check engine light is on but not flashing. The vehicle is usually a hard starter. Meaning that I will have to crank it over for several seconds to get it to start. However if the vehicle sits for 2 or more days without use then it will immediately fire up I mean like right now. Also if I shut of the vehicle and then restart within a few seconds it will also fire up immediately. The smell of fuel around the engine is common when I park the vehicle. However I have never seen any evidence of fuel leaks on my driveway. Ocassionally I will notice an odor that I thought might be antifreeze but Im not positive of that. I only smell it when starting or after I have shut of the vehicle. Tonight I noticed that the hood was extremely hot almost to the point where I could not leave my hand on it (it is only 65 degrees out and cloudy). That might just be a condition common with Jeeps but I thought I should mention it. Any help you can provide is appreciated. Thanks. Mike

The throttle body looked fine and the guy at autozone said that the code indicated that it was was not a dirty sensor so I took it in to a local shop. Turned out that a fuel injector needed to be replaced. All is good now.

Fuel injector would make sense. I should have mentioned that. Glad you got it fixed.

My 95 jeep cherokkee wont fire i bought a new coil, rotor button and wires and a crank sensor

Might be the main part, your ecu, which is bad. Does the check engine light show up on the dash when you turn the key to on, before cranking the engine? If no check engine light on the dash, then it's the ecu that's in need of repair.

The miss, does not just come and go,if it is a engine valve, replace the coil and boot,go from there,if this does not solve the problem, then the injector is gone out,or going out.If it is a engine valve, the miss would never get better, then worse,it would be the same all the time, get him to run a air compression test, get the valves up(close)and see if any air is detected threw the exhaust,or the intake,it will be present if the valve is the problem.
