That sounds like a problem with the valve body, and check to be certain that the proper gaskets were used for the valve body, and either there is a valve(s) that is sticking or is not properly installed in the valve body, or the check balls in the valve body are missing or out of place.

If the transmission was rebuilt at a repair facility then it should be taken back there, and if not then a problem with the valve body is still the most likely suspect and the manual shift valve might not be installed properly.

so i replayed the entire valve body and not it seems to be worse.. before you would hit the gas and it would sound normal but only it would be in drive the entire time not matter what. now it feels like the parking brake is on. you have to kind of rev it up to even get it to move ( still only has drive) while the valve body was out i tried to move as much as i could and the gears seem to move. any other ideas?

What exactly is the vehicle, and do you know if the transmission is a F5A51, or a F4A-EL?

  • Zaraki Aug 27, 2010

That Spectra should have an F4A-EL transmission.

It is a 2001 kia spectra 1.8l automatic w/ overdrive. I'm not sure which one it is. Id have to look again I don't remember

  • noptatahs Aug 27, 2010

The transmission operates by channeling hydraulic fluid through control valves and fluid channels to activate the proper clutch packs and band(s) to obtain the desired gear, and there is definitely a control pressure problem with that transmission. The most common suspects to look for will be the manual valve is not properly installed, the check-balls are not properly installed, the transfer plate and the valve body have the gaskets switched and the gaskets are in the wrong place, or the gaskets are the wrong ones being used, there is a problem with the front pump assembly or the gasket is not properly aligned, or there is an internal crack in the transmission case somewhere that is allowing fluid to travel where it should normally not be able to flow.

1987 Dodge Dakota 6cyl. won't shift into reverse, drives forward in neutral but won't shift out of 1st that way. Drives and shifts fine in "D".

Is this an automatic? I can't tell if column shift or console? With column shift, Did you try taking shift linkage loose from tranny and shifting by hand? There are safety issues with trying that, make sure functional parking brake is set and the wheels are blocked. Also, have a helper sitting there with foot on the brake. Safety is your responsibility.

Maybe just a tranny issue, I'm not a tranny person.

You might be able to start it and kill it in drive? There are safety issues trying this and I don't want the responsibility. Safety is you responsibility.

1997 Chevy Malibu LS will go into reverse fine, but not into drive.

If you found blackened transmission fluid in an automatic transmission - I'd say you found your problem! I'd be willing to bet the discoloration is material from internal clutches that has been worn off and caused overheating. Sorry, but this will likely require rebuilding or replacing.

Have a look here for add'l info on tranny oil color:

Why wont tranny up shift 79 camaro

Did it work before you put in the new fluid? Sounds like you need a rebuild. if you have the time it can be fun and a learning experience, I built a 70 pontiac GTO with a friend but it took us three tries to get it right. you will need a friend to help get it in and out. the most likely cause for the failure is dirt blocking ports or valves or little steel balls. even if you change the filter it is proboly to late now

LOST ALL TRANNY FLUID

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but it sounds like you either lost your torque converter or the forward seal on the tranny most likely do to an inner pump problem. All this adds up to a transmission rebuild unfortunately.

Same as a lot of folks. 1995 Pathfinder. Without warning will not reverse. Hardly any difference in RPM between park/Neutral/Reverse. How can I tell if I need a rebuild ?

if it is the automatic transmission and the other gears work but it wont drive in reverse. then I suspect the transmission fluid is too low.
are you checking the fluid correctly?
my sister had a car that reverse went out on. my dad asked her, how long has it been doing this?
she said 6 months and that she had to always park in a position that she wouldnt need reverse.
my dad asked how is the fluid? my sister said its always full on the dip stick.
she showed my dad it was full.
she didnt check the level correctly..
she checked the fluid when the car was cold. she checked the fluid when the car had been sitting for quite sometime and when it was not running.
.
run the engine till the transmission is warm. shift the car in all the gears. leave the car running in park on level ground and check the fluid then.

Reverse acts as neutral. (auto tranny)

It is hard to say, but as long as all of the forward gears work fine, then it might work for a long time. But without knowing what is wrong, I would at least change the fluid to remove as much metal or clutch material as you can. Don't worry about the filter, you can't change it without disassembling the trans. Just drain the fluid and refill it. This won't fix reverse, but it might prolong further problems. And don't park where you can't pull straight out.

Car will not go move in forward gears

You are going to need a Rebuild on this Tranny. Unless you know how to Rebuild a Tranny, I would have it done at a Tranny Shop. If you get the Clutches in the Wrong order During Rebuild it could Crack the Housing on the Tranny and cause a Bigger Problem. Please Rate My Response! Thanks!

Shift problems in 95 chrysler concorde transmission

Sorry but if your reverse is having trouble you will probably have to replace or rebuild tranny like me. Otherwise try new filter and fluid first.
