Question about 1990 Buick Reatta

1 Answer

I have a 2007 MKX and it will die while driving right after I fill the gas tank. It usually will do it until I reach 3/4 of a tank. Then it runs with no problem. Any suggestions.

How much fuel is left when the low fuel light comes on

It varies for every car. Usually 1-1.5 gallons when the low fuel light comes on. I drove my last '93 Ford Taurus around until the gauge said it was empty. Lifted the car and took the gas tank off and it had 3 or more gallons still in it. Here's some fun, zero your odometer, fill the gas tank and drive it until the low fuel light comes on. Then drive it till it dies out, obviously somewhere near home or where someone can drop off a full gas can.

What is the gas mileagefot my car

1. Fill gas tank 2. Record odometer reading 3. Drive car as usual until 1/4 full. 4. Fill gas tank and record how many gallons it took to fill it again. 5. Record new odometer reading and subtract original reading. 6. Divide miles driven by gallons used.

My 2007 lincoln mkz overheated today.

possibly a hose or water pump leaking, but only while driving when full pressure is on the system. first check your oil and make sure theres no water in the oil.if no water in the oil, then fill the radiator, and let run in driveway until it reaches temp 190 to 210 and look for water leak then. If it were just the thermostat then you should have a boil over in coolant tank and wld/shld be able to smell or see the coolant loss. also inspect your radiator sides front and back, your radiator may have a hole

Don't let the car run out of gas. Fill the tank and run until the tank is half empty. Again fill the tank.
By driving until you run out of gas, you are letting sediments/dirt collected in the bottom of the tank to enter the engine. Rather they will block the fuel filter. Then gas will not reach the engine.
Clean the gas filter and your car will run fine.
The same advice again. Don't drive until the tank becomes empty.

Sounds like your gas guage isn't accurate. A fuel pump is not designed to draw fuel from the tank until it is completly dry. This is to avoid sucking up all the debris on the bottom of the tank.

When I go to fill up the gas tank the gas keeps cutting off at the pump handle and I have to slow the gas pump to a trickle in order to fill the tank.

The problem is that your gas tank "pushes back" like it's full even when it isn't and makes the fuel valve click off. Tom and Ray on Car Talk covered this in a 2007 show and I pasted some of their response below:

"RAY: This condition is probably caused by either a blockage in your gasoline vapor recovery lines or a bad refueling control valve.

TOM: Gasoline vaporizes. How do we know that? Well, when gasoline is spilled, you can smell it, right? What you're smelling is vaporized gasoline.

RAY: And in the old days, when you filled up your tank, all the air inside the tank -- the air filled with gasoline vapors -- came whooshing out through the filler hole or through a vent at the top of the gas tank.

TOM: But then people in places like Los Angeles realized they couldn't see the person standing next to them due to smog. And since gasoline vapors contribute to smog, car makers were forced to install devices to capture those vapors.

RAY: So now each car has a vapor recovery unit that collects the gasoline vapors from the tank and then, the next time the car is started, sends them to the engine, where they're combusted. Your vapor recovery system isn't working, Lottie. One possibility is that one of the rubber hoses is blocked or collapsed."
