Question about 1998 Lincoln Continental

1 Answer

98 Lincoln Continental, wont shift out of first gear, is not locked in first. On occasion the Check Transmission alert will come on the display, and the car will work fine until it hits about 40 mph, then it's rpm's want to shoot up for the car to drive any faster. The alert goes away when this happens. Check Steering Assist will come up and then Check Ride Control will pop up. Steering and Ride Control work perfectly fine when these errors come up and work fine all the time. My doors won't auto lock over 5 mph like it used to, and the feature is still activated on the display menu. Also my cruise control does not work. There wasn't anything to my knowledge that started my car like this, one day i drove it, parked it in my drive way, and then i turned it back on about 2 hours later and the car was acting up like this. It still drives, just my car will be damaged at high way speeds, I did get the transmission fluid flushed (was a suspect at first sight, and was almost burnt anyways). Any help would be appreciated, I'm guessing its a computer problem.

My 1999 lincoln Continental wont shift out of "PARK"

Is the vehicle parked on an incline? The parking pin may be slightly jammed. If you can VERY CAREFULLY nudge the vehicle up the hill an inch or two, using another vehicle, the shift lever may free itself.
If the vehicle is parked on level ground, suspect the LOCKING SOLENOID for the shift lever.
Less likely, the parking pin may be jammed (inside the transmission), or the shift lever linkage may have become damaged.

I have a 1994 Lincoln Contenental. Car drives just fine in first gear but will not shift into second gear.

If it is an automatic check and make sure that you have enough automatic transmission fluid in the car to little fluid will not allow the transmission to shift.

I had the Transmission fluid changed 6,000 miles ago. On occasion it shifts / slips "hard" between gears. I'm now told to have the complete system flushed including a new filter. Please advise if...

Check the vacuum lines going from trans to the intake. Sometimes that will cause it to rev real hi and shift real hard. Even a small leak. They prob jast dropped the pan and changed filter b4. That leaves the oil in the lines there. you have to pump it all out to change it all. My trans in my lincoln just went out. So i would say it wouldnt hurt to change it. Put some lucus trans treatment in it to. Couldnt hurt.

97 lincoln continental auto trans wont shift out of first gear

Most common causes of your problem are the following:
  1. Low transmission fluid
  2. Old/brown transmission fluid
  3. Broken transmission line (any pools of trans fluid on the ground?)
  4. Broken transmission vacuum line
  5. Transmission needs adjustment
  6. Transmission itself needs repair
The first 3 can be checked visually, the last 3 most likely need a mechanic to verify.

1997 Lincoln Continental transmission

I am not entirely certain I understand what button you are describing. However I think you are talking about the button that has to be depressed in order to shift gears. Aside from the transmission not being able to return to the park position, it has no effect on the key being removed from the ignition lock cylinder. The ignition lock cylinder wearing out and not releasing is a very common problem and requires a new ignition lock cylinder.
