This is not a solution..I just want to see if you had these symptoms..Mine did the same thing tonight(9-22-10, '98 Olds Cutlass) I went to the gas station..got back in the car to start it, and it sounded like the battery was dead (clicking when turning the ignition) and then all my gauges started moving around very quickly. The gas gauge went all the way around and is also stuck under then pin. I tried to jump it, but no luck. Did this happen to you and did you figure out how to fix it? Thanks.

Have not figured out how to fix the problem. Mine happened when I had to disconnect the battery and when I reconnected it the gauge spun all the way around. No idea how to fix the problem.

1998 Olds Cutlass- My gauges were moving around very quickly when I turned the ignition. It won't start now and sounds like the battery is dead, but it's not. My gas gauge has spun around and sits under...

HiYour battery is not fully charged, jump start vehicle and take it to and AutoZone or similar auto parts store to have your charging/starting system checked for free.
On the gauges issue, you have to remove the instrument cluster and manually turn/reset the gas gauge. I have a 98 Olds Intrigue and happened a few times. I pull the gauge needle out and set it where it would be if the key where OFF, then plug the electrical connector on the cluster and turn the key to ON to verify gauge positions, on my case, I had to reset the temp. gauge too.
Good Luck! Don't forget to rate this post!!

My 2006 nissan maxim fuel gauge needle spun all the way around to the stop and will not return, Could you tell me what might be the problem

Disconnect the wiring at the tank sender and see if it drops. If so replace tank sender.
If not there is a short in the wiring loom

Fuel gauge is stuck on the back side of top pin.

you can remove the cluster from the car pull the plastic cover off fill your car up so you will know where to put the full level at remover the pin simply by pulling on it it may seem like if wont come off but that is because it is supposed to be tight put it back in at empty and replace the cluster if the needle goes to full then it is right if not you put the pin in wrong retry till it reads full if the neddle just doesnt move then replace fuel pump

Gas gauge has spun past full and appears stuck behind empty peg.

the fuel sending unit in the tank is a rheostat wrapped wire it increases the resistance read at the gauge the more fuel the more resistance.
what it sounds like is a dead short either in the sending unit or the wire running to it.
to check sending unit in the tank, locate the closest wiring harness plug (in the trunk/or under car) and disconnect then check gauge reading, remember ignition must be on.
try that and get back to me if needed

1995 Honda Civic fuel gauge always shows full. I removed instrument cluster and moved gauge down by hand. The needle moves back to full when key is switched to acc position. I found no loose wires or bad...

Well, theres a sending unit/float in the tank that sends a signal thru wires to your instrument cluster's fuel gauge. You should have an auto electric repairperson determine where your problem lies. It's not often the needle's just 'stuck' to where you could dislodge it. More often, it's pegged overfull or underempty-signaling a shorted component upstream of the gauge.

Similar problem and found the solution:
In the back of the gauge, where the 2 coils are located, there are very tiny copper wires which connect all the resistors/diodes. they each travel from within the coil and are soldered to 3 out of the 4 mounting pins. if any of these wires are shorting out or disconnected, the gauge will malfunction.

- take the gauge and flip upside down
- temp gauge has 1 resistor (blue) and 1 diode (copper)
- fuel gauge has 2 resistors, no diodes
- 1 wire should be attached to bottom mounting pin (letter E for EMPTY)
- 1 wire should be attached to pin holding both resistors (half tank)
- 1 wire should be attached to the stand-alone ground pin (no mounting bracket)

Hope that helps!

Fuel gauge spun around and is now stuck below the empty mark.

I got a magnet from an old stereo speaker and used it to flip it around on 06 Maxima, took five minutes.

Fuel Gauge spun around in opposite direction. The electronic display still shows the mileage remaining. What could the problem be???

It will take about 30 min to fix. Well that's how long it took me to reapair my 2006 SL. First remove the 3 screws from the shroud around your column they are under your column. Make sure your column is extended and in its lowest position. Second remove the 3 trim pieces on top of the cluster by using a flat blade screwdriver be careful not to damage your dash. Third remove the single screw on top of the cluster and the two that are underneath. Fourth release the tabs that hold the bezel around your cluster. Fifth each lens can then be removed exposing the gauge face and needles. Sixth gently move the needle counter clockwise until it rest on top of the needle stop. Seventh try to remember how it all goes back together haha. No really it is a piece of cake 30 to 40 min versus the 2 hour quote from my local Nissan dealer.
