Question about 2000 Audi A6

1 Answer

I have just purchased a 2000 A6 Quattro. Very clean and beautiful to drive. I have 2 questions: 1. It has a tiptronic transmissiion - where do you check the fluid? 2. At low speed there is a shuddering when making a tight turn. I have been told this is normal for all wheel drive. Is this true or is there a problem? Thanks Paul

There is no dipstick for the transmission to check level, it is a sealed transmission as are all VW's and Audi's made since the middle 90's, the dealer has a special tool to check level through a plug on the trans case, next the problem you have could be the transfer case needs a fluid change, the symptom you have sounds like worn out fluid (the friction modifiers wears out and the internal clutches chatter), the fluid should be changed every 30,000 miles in the transmission and the transfer case

It absolutely could be the immobilizer (security system). Have you ever had the master key? All the keys should work but if one becomes deprogrammed it needs to be reset (unfortunately by the dealer).
But, before you do that...
Have you checked the voltage level of your battery? It could very well be that your battery has enough juice to power all the accessories but not enough to crank the engine. Try jump starting the car or replacing the battery and see if it starts. Let us know if that works.

1998 audi a6 2.8 quattro tiptronic doesnt work but auto still fine?

Google it - Check this LINK. If your horn or other steering wheel controls do not work, it's likely the clockspring - the device that transmits the inputs from the steering wheel into the wiring harness under the dash. Pray it's not, otherwise your Audi tech will be buying himself a new S4.

Oil level problem with 2005 Audi A6 3.0 TDI Diesel Quattro

My 2005 A4 3.0 convertible audi is not a diesel, but I had a similar experience with a low oil signal going on and after checking the oil, which was sufficient, and replacing the dipstick, the light did not come back on until a subsequent trip. The light usualIy went on when I was close to the needing an oil change. I've had the car, a used one, for about two years, and the oil light minimum signal started behaving like yours early. About a week ago the oil pressure warning light came on. I don't know if there's a relationship, but if there is be careful. Audis of our vintage have a problem with sludge build up that damages the oil pump, which is a costly item. If you drive the car with low oil pressure you may seriously/fatally damage the car. I don't know if the sludge, if that's what you have, can be cleaned out, but I'd do it if it can be. My mechanic advised me to trade the car to a dealer rather than fix it. Hope you have better luck!

1999 AUDI A6 avant 2.8L quattro. Car vibrates

This is a manual transmission? If so the clutch probably needs to be replaced. When you say "VIOLENTLY" what is going on, what is the road speed, what are the RPMs at? The more specific information the better. And this problem ONLY occurs between gear changes, right? The other times, everything is normal?

You need to get into a transmission shop right away. The fluid/filter may just need to be changed, or it could go way beyond that.

Transmission stays in one gear

I just had this same problem yesterday, thouh I have a 98 A6 2.8 . With mine. The engine was sending air flow metering fault codes to the ecm. Then the electronics in the transmission reads the codes then puts the transmission into 'limp mode'. The tiptronic didn't work, All the gear selection lights on the dash display stayed lit. And when the car is shut down and restarted, If you try to drive it, the vehicle stays in third gear. This has happened twice in the life of the car.
You could always take it to a dealer where they'll help you unload some piles of cash the 401k plans didn't take. But I would start by taking a personal hand held scanner and make a log of the stored codes. Then, with the scanner you can reset and delete these codes. Then as with mine. All your problems go away. If they come back, at that point visit you local dealer.

Faulty petrol gauge

I had same problem with petrol gauge bouncing around all over the place, full tank, half a tank and nearly empty in the space of 10 miles.

I knew that if I filled the tank I would get approx 200 miles for half a tank so I did that for a while and just kept topping up. Audi testing it and the fuel sensors in the tank had to be replaced. I'm afraid its the only permanent solution!
