Question about 2005 Jeep Wrangler

1 Answer

I have a 2005 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited with 4.0 engine - when sitting over night (cold) engine start, after about 4-5 min after starting, I get this tic, tic,tic tic, from the engine, about half warmed up or full warm up it stops, some have said it might or may be one of the injectors, is there anyway to test injectors or tell if this is the problem?

Don't these 4.0 inline 6's have hyd. lifters, so there wouldn't be any adjustments for valve lash, or am I wrong on this, as I don't have a repair manual for this Jeep engine, as I just purchased with

Lets try to verify were the sound is comming from. Injectors usually don't "TIC" they spray. But the best way to determine where the sound is comming from is to use a stethoscope. (sold in Auto zone), place it on the the noisy tin and listen.
What you describing sounds more like valves.

Injectors don't stop making noises if they are making noises after vehicle is warmed up.
Use a stethoscope you will cut your diagnosis time in half and the tool can be used again.

The sound you are hearing is an exhaust leak at the manifold. Jeep manifolds are notorious for cracking. The sound is more noticeable on a cold engine because as the manifold warms the metal expands and closes the gap where the leak is. I have had this happen and replaced three manifolds on my Jeeps.

There are several things you need to check. Start by checking the alignment between the pinion gear of the starter and the flywheel. If that is loose or binding the starter will do this. Next, check teh starter relay to make sure it isn't faulting out. finally, if you have an Alarm installed, cut the power wire to the alarm or pull the fuse to make sure it isn't the Anti-Theft circuit malfunctioning and stopping it from starting.

Your engine computer is going bad. There are three capacitors inside the ecu that are going bad, unable to hold current. You can replace the entire ecu or try and change out the capacitors in your ecu. It's a common problem with early 90's jeep ecu's.

Sounds like a short in the electrical system. Maybe even just a loose ground wire. On the other hand...It could just as easily be a bad ECM (BRAIN)! Warranty still in tact? I hope so. Diagnostic at a certified Jeep shop... Good Luck!

On my 05 Wrangler Unlt'd Ruby - The vacuum hose on the drivers side of engine had come off, which disengaged my Cruise and the actuator which determines whether my heater points to the vent, Defrost or feet. Put it back on and secure with a cable tie.

If it is like mine, you will then have idling problems, especially when coming to a stop. You will need to clean the throttle body because the engine has picked up **** through the open port while it was off. Directions for that exist on this site elsewhere.

All of these are easy - i hadn't worked on a car in >25 years and it took me 30 min.
