Hi,
those timing belt tensioners on those strip out and they go out of time. If your handy you could rethread it with a new bolt, but the bolt is special, maybe you have a volkswagen mechanic in your area, tell him this, but take the cover off and check your timing marks and make sure this is what it is for sure, if its in time then maybe a vac leak or clogged fuel filter.
good luck

After the engine is spinning over, fuel is admitted to the cylinders and is ignited, and the engine starts to run under its own power. If a vehicle "turns over" but won't start, there is probably NOTHING WRONG with your starter, battery, or alternator.

Driving down the road at about 50-55 miles per hour when suddenly the engine loses power and the dash lights, instrument panel is off too. I coast to a stop and try to restart the car but get no response...

Since no one has answered in 8 days I hope you have fixed this by now. What is different about your problem is the loss of power to the dash lights and instrument panel. You have a series of relays in the fuse boxes.

You seem to be losing power before the power is assigned to the smaller relays like the fuel pump and ignition relay. There is a master fusible link but your headlights probably would not have power if this fusible link were fried.

I would go online for wiring diagrams for your vehicle date and model. Consider this as a tree-like structure. At some point there is a junction that powers the headlights and beyond that powers the starter solenoid on cranking. The headlight side is fine but lower in the tree is what cranks the engine and runs the other electronics.

Do not worry about the fuel pump relay yet. Key in on the starter solenoid lacking power to crank. Remember to press your brake pedal when cranking.

2.5L 4cyl engine. I just sold min last week. with 5sp M/T
cuts out, does that mean the engine stalls?
we need to know what it really does.
1: stalls (engine rpm drops to 0 RPM)
2: engine rpm drops to 300rpm and shakes.
3: power loss from engine?
4: only stalls at stop signs...?
5: bogs all them time, same as #3
6: engine misfires (shake)
7: bogs only on throttle TIP-IN then recovers.
8: bogs only on hills.

i wait.

I have a 1997 jimmy and it cranks up fine but it starts bogging down when i am driving and when i try to climb a hill

You may have a clogged up egr valve. When the egr valve gets clogged up with carbon, the truck will run rough, surge stall, and be very anemic on power. Is the service engine soon(check engine) light on? I've dealt with this issue before, and those 4.3 v6's tend to get egr issues. Try this: when it bogs and runs rough, stop truck, open hood, and tap on egr valve base( where it bolts to engine) if rough running clears up, there's your problem. Egr valve is located on front of engine just to the rt of alternator bracket.

2002 Tahoe engine will not start

Electrical problems are difficult to diagnose in person without testing ...however, it seems that you may be loosing the body ground, causing power loss to the clock and likely the computer as well. As the starter is able to turn the engine, likely there is no problem with engine grounding. While cranking, the accessory side of the ignition switch should remain "hot" otherwise you would loose the clock every time you started it up. If it's not a ground problem, I'd look at the ignition switch itself to make sure it's not dropping power to ignition system while starter is engaged. on some vehicles this can also happen at the starter relay if an ignition bypass is used to provide hotter starting spark.

If this is a gas engine, check the ignition coil or plug wires. A simple test...

Start the truck at night, then look under the hood while it's running. Don't use a flashlight or your headlights; it should be dark !

If you see sparks anywhere around the engine, you've found the problem. Now you can turn on a light to see where they're coming from - probably from a cracked ignition coil.

Good luck !
