SOURCE: Sometimes the steering wheel feels loose and shakes

Begin by making sure your wheels are balanced properly, have no mud stuck on them and are torqued to the correct settings (most jeeps are set at about 75-80lbs always in a star pattern)If the problem continues, have the ball joints checked, the track bar end connections and mount, steering box, where it bolts to the chassis and all other moving parts in the steering linkage.(tie rod ends etc) Do not let anyone tell you that the steering stabilizer (sideways shock on the linkage) will cure the problem...It can and will go bad if the shaking continues but it is not the cause, rather a victim of the problem (same for shocks)
The order I listed the parts in is the order of most common to least common failures that will make it shake like that, so check them in that order.

SOURCE: Steering is no longer tight, there seems to be to

At this point, you need to look underneath and check for play while someone works the wheel back and forth. Then, jack up each wheel and put a bar under it and try to lift the tire while someone watches the ball joints for play. All front end components should have very little or no play. Any that do need to be replaced. (that goes for bushings as well)

SOURCE: have a 1996 jeep grand cherokee zg model

The Jeep has steering idlers (short 7" arms) that eliminate wandering. Sounds like they are worn but FIRSTLY check that you have 4 identical tyre pressures as just one tyre front or back being low will give you the wandering sensation in a 4x4

I have a 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. There is a "violent" vibration that occurs only when you are going 40-60 MPH and you hit a bump or pot hole on the highway. The front end begins to...

Vibration from about 40-60 mph is usually attributed to wheel balancing, but the onset when you hit a bump seems to indicate play in the steering linkages (tie rods etc) or suspension members and stabiliser bar rubbers but you had that all checked out, that brings us back to the wheel balancing.

Loose / wandering steering. Ball joints are new. Wheel bearings seem tight.

That's a classic sign of a loose steering gear box on that generation Grand Cherokee. Have your jeep checked out for play, in the gearbox.

The 1st thing to check would be every steering mount points. If even one of them is loose,it will wobble like a bum over a bucket. Then check all wheel bearings.Have a look at these things first.Hope this helps

If you mean looseness in a side to side movement before the wheels turn, then you have bad tie-rod ends.
