When you pull the headrest all the way to its top then push the little button that lets the headrest move back down but pull up on it and it will come out will little effort

Details here. It is to discourage people from removing them as they an important life saving feature in the case of an accident. No more broken necks these days. Your head is the heaviest part of your body and you can't control it if hit from the rear at even 30mph!
Jan. 19, 2012 - PKung. Raise the head rest all the way up with the button on the driver's side of the driver's head rest post. On the passenger's side of the passenger's side post, there's a flush 'button' that does indeed press in to release the other post.
I have a 2012 malibu and looked this same thing up because I just put on a seat cover, on the driver's side head rest, looking at it from the back seat on the driver's side, there's the normal looking latch that let's you adjust the headrest down, but on the right side you'll see a little indentation in the plastic that you can also push down and if you press both at the same time, you can remove the headrest.
Unscrew front seat head rest guide rod retainers (610A18) .
Pull up on front seat back head restraint (611A08) . Compress foam in area of front seat head rest guide rod sleeves (610A16) .
Remove front seat back head restraint positioning springs. Pull front seat back head restraint up and out.
Installation
Slide front seat head rest guide rod retainers onto front seat back head restraint posts.
Compress foam in front seat head rest guide rod sleeve area. Install positioning springs on front seat head rest guide rod sleeves .
Insert front seat back head restraint posts (notches on posts facing rearward) into front seat head rest guide rod sleeves and push down to engage positioning spring.
NOTE: Front seat back head restraint must operate smoothly throughout its range of travel, must remain in any fixed position, and must not be freely removable from the seat back. If any of these conditions are not met, check for proper installation of positioning spring onto front seat head rest guide rod sleeve .
Tighten front seat head rest guide rod retainers onto front seat head rest guide rod sleeves .
Adjust front seat back head restraint by applying hand pressure, either up or down, to center area of front seat back head restraint .
raise the head rest all the way up. look at the plastic grommets where the head rest slides in. one should have a small tab you push in the release the head rest while pulling up. good luck!
There should be tiny holes in the plastic covers at the base of the chrome rods attached to the headrest use a paper clip and push it in the holes as you pull on the headrest in the full up postion.
Head Restraints
Each front seat is equipped with dual-post design front seat back head restraint (611A08).
The front seat back head restraint is installed as follows:
It travels on dual posts which have notches to engage a spring-loaded catch in the guide.
The front seat back spring assembly retains the front seat head rest guide rod sleeve (610A16).
The front seat back head restraint is adjustable from its normal position to a raised position of approximately 25 mm (1 inch).
Pull up on the front seat back head restraint to raise it. Pushing down will return it to its normal position.
Unscrew front seat head rest guide rod retainers (610A18).
Pull up on front seat back head restraint (611A08). Compress foam in area of front seat head rest guide rod sleeves (610A16).
Remove front seat back head restraint positioning springs. Pull front seat back head restraint up and out.

Try this i found this at another site sounds like it should work
01. Sit in the rear seat facing the front seat you will be removing the head rest from 02. Lean the front seat back so you are looking down at the head rest 03. Pull the head rest up as far as it will go 04. Take a small flat head screwdriver and slide in into one of the holes surrounding the head rest poles 05. Move it around until you feel some resistance (if you're lucky, you might be able to move the fabric a little and actually see the clip you need to remove) 06. Wiggle the screw driver around until the clip pops out (it may take a while, but eventually it will pop out) 07. Repeat steps 4-6 for the second head rest pole 08. Once you get the head rest off, turn it upside down and you will see two very thin metal discs holding the seat belt guide onto the head rest, you need to remove these 09. Take a screwdriver and pry up on the discs 10. Once you get the discs up a little bit, put some soap on the head rest poles 11. Take a towel and start twisting the discs, continue doing this until they
