Question about Pontiac Fiero

Open Question

Hello, i have a 1984 pontiac fiero that was missing the belt tensioner pully. i bought one online, along with the hanes repair manual but there is no pic of it in the book. it looks like the crank pully(if that is the correct name)the bottom one,is like pointing the belt toward the motor. i lined it up as close as i could without the belt hitting at the alternator but after revving to 3500 rpm i could see it was starting too fray the outside edge of belt on right. i'm at a loss, i've been looking for a car like mine so i can physically look at it, but so far no go. anyway, thank you for your time.

SOURCE: hi i just bought a 1984 pontiac fiero. drove it

I own an 86 v6 fiero, not an 84 4-cyl like yours probably is.
If you have the old belt, and it broke in one place, just wrap it around the alternator or whatever pulley you were talking about and see where it reaches in a snug position (as it was approximately installed before it snapped)

If there are two pulleys on the same shaft, just pick whichever one is square to the other connecting pulleys. Or just check to see if one shows signs of use or is rusted/dusty (like it hasn't been used recently).

How many pulleys are there total? Water pump, alternator, drive, a/c...4 total? One serpentine belt for all? Give me some more info
and I'll let you know what to do if you haven't figured it out by now

How do I adjust alternator belt?

Check to see if there is a tensioner pully that adjust the belt tightness. The tension pulley a small pulley will have two bolts on it one of them loosens and tightens the belt around the alternator and compressor USUALLY.

My left headlight door wont open when i turn the lights on 1985 pontiac fiero

If you open the hood, behind the headlight assembly you will see the motor that lifts the headlight, there is a knob that you can rotate to manually to crank up the headlight until you repair it.

Before you put it up manually, turn on the headlights with the hood open and listen to see of the motor is making noise, if it is you can try a repair kit, otherwise get a replacement from the auto part store or junk yard.

Here is a handy place for Fiero parts including the headlight repair kit I mentioned:

Hope this helps

I have a 1988 pontiac fire bird and i took it a part to rebuild it and have it all back together and lost the belt route a possibly a pulley but can't figure out what one is missin if there is one missing...

It sounds like you are missing the idler pully. I need to know what size motor you have to get you the diagram. If this car is a v belt style you manually set tension. If this is serpentine belt style sound like your missing the tensioner too.

I am looking for a wiring diagram for an 89 Pontiac GTA. Is one available?

You can find one in the back of a Hanes repair manual for your car (usually in front of the index). You may also be able to find one online at, using their online repair manuals. You will have to create an account to use the online manual. Personally, I would go buy the Hanes manual, simply for ease of use and portability.

Where is the brake light relay on a 1984 Fiero

Check the brake light switch. It's located under the dash by the brake pedal. Disconnect the electrical connector from the switch. Jump the connector with a paper clip. Be careful not to let the paper clip touch a metal surface. If the brake lights come on then the problem is a faulty brake light switch.
