Question about 2003 Toyota Highlander

1 Answer

My wife went to the grocery store and when she got home, our 2003 toyota highlander won't go into park. I have tried the little transmission-Park unlock button on the console; I checked the transmission fluid (full & clean) and drove it around for 10 minutes. We live in Lewisville TX and it has been 100 - 105 for three weeks.

Check cable for kink as it goes into sheath under console. You probably need a new cable.

Testimonial: "The problem did turn out to be the cable - this is surreal but it was a battery post cap that had broken off and was jamming the cable, just like othe"

Toyota camry drove home and parked and now won't move? NO ****** ISSUES BEFORE THIS!

It will not move in Reverse either? It could be

- the shift cable has broken
- the parking lock pawl has broken
- park/neutral position switch faulty
- transmission manual valve faulty

I think one of the first 3. There isn't much you can do except have it towed to a transmission shop.

How do i take 2003 highlander out of park when the engine doesn't start?

Hi! If you turn on the ignition and depress the brake pedal, the shifter should move whether the engine is started or not. If it does not release, have someone check to see if the brake lights work. If the brake lights do not work, you will likely not be able to move the shifter. If they do not, check the STOP fuse and see if it is blown. If you have NO power anywhere (no dash lights, etc) you can remove the small cover near the shifter (usually about10mm square) and depress the white button underneath. The shifter should come out of park at that point.

2002 toyota Highlander. will not go into park. will drive fine in all gears, but from rev to park is basically impossible. Have to push rather strongly to get it there in order to turn off and get key out....

Hello. Welcome to FixYa.

It sounds like the bushing on the transmission, where the shift cable attaches, is either broken or seized.

What to do:

Go out, open the hood, and have someone move the shift lever. Observe the front of the transmission, on the driver side, where the cable meets the lever on the front of the transmission.

The bushing may be seized or broken.

Having trouble removing rear disc brake rotor fron

This vehical has drum styal park brake shoes on the inside of the brake rotor so make sure the park brake isn't set and you can turn the rotor. If you can't turn the rotor you will have to look into this first if the park brake is set or sticking you won't get the rotor off if thats ok try spray with penting oil helps a little. I use a 4 or 5 lb sluge hammer and hit the rotor kinds close to the wheel studs about 5 times then hit the outer edge from the back side also works on the outerside. Don't be afread to hit hard I never broke one.

Yes that is correct. But sometimes the trans is sealed off, so even having the fluid checked has to be done by the dealership.

You should have had the transmission fluid changed at 30, 000 miles, and you should have the transmission flushed at 60,000.
Change the timing belt at 90, 000 miles (if you have a V-6).
Change the air filter every 15,000 miles.
Check the spark plug condition at 60,000, and change the coolant at 60,000.
