If the pulley is not connected to anything, then it is most likely an idler or tensioner pulley.

There is a grinding sounding noise coming from the engine compartment. when turning the heat on it goes away. about two weeks ago the drive belt was replaced

When you turn on the blower it puts an extra load on the alternator. Meaning the belt is working harder and gets tighter. A tighter belt gives less slop in the pulleys and bearings. So it could be the idle pulley, tensioner pulley, or alternator. Take the belt loose and check for sloppiness in any of these. They all should turn easily and be a smooth turn.

My 01 duramax has broken 2 power steering pulleys in a month.Any ideas?

Check that the v section of the belt is correct if it is a v belt drive. If the top section of the belt is too wide for the pulleys there is extra load placed on the edges of the pulley flanges. A correct fitting belt should be level with the top of the flanges or just feel able above the flanges.

Put in new alternator..squeals badly now ..how come?

check to make sure the belt tension is not to tight and make sure the belt is on and running in the same direction that it was when it was removed, it could be riding slightly different on the pulley system. or the pulley on the new alternator is slightly different then the original.
look at the suggestions above -- and if all looks ok - then just drive it for a day or so and see if the squealling goes away.
if you are still having troubles - please feel free to write back and ask me,, I will do my best to walk you thru the next steps needed to find this problem.

Where can i find a diagram and locate the water pump in my 95 cougar so i can replace it myself?

If you open the hood and look around the frame of the engine compartment, or on the under side of the hood, there should be a diagram available that shows the way the belts are run on your cougar. It will show you the alternator, water pump, power steering pump, crank pulley, tensioner, A/C and any extra pulleys.

Usually it is located somewhere above the crank pulley a bit to the left or right.

Replacing the alternater

1. Unhook the battery.
2. Find the pulley the serpentine belt runs on that isn't running anything. This is your tension pulley and it should have a square hole in it or the arm the pulley is bolted too that fits a 1/2" socket ratchet. Put that in the square hole and pull so it loosens the tension on the belt so you can remove it from the alternator pulley. Take note to how the belt goes on before taking off.
3. Take the 2-3 bolts off that hold the alternator in place.
4. Take wire connector plug off of alternator.

And you should have an alternator out of your car.

Good Luck

How many belts are there on the power steering , alternator & fan on a 1965 Chevy Nova 194 6 cylinder with out air?

There are two (2) belts total. The power steering belt also goes around the fan/alternator. Double pulley on the alternator/fan, single pulley on power steering pump. The power steering pump mounts above the alternator on the left side of the engine.

Altonator belt help for escort 1998 gti zetec

I tried to attach a photo of the diagram but, would not let me. Remember the smooth side or back of the belt runs on the smooth pulleys. The grooved rides on the grooved pulleys. Starting at the altermator it goes around the topof the alternator then below the tensioner then around theback side and bottom of the crank pulley and the bottom of the a/c compressor. There is a small smooth idler pulley just above the a/c that the back side of the belt rides on then it goes to the outside of the p/s pully then back up to the alternator. Hope this helps. I will try to attach the photos again.

How do I release belt tension to replace alternator?

Hi,according to what year you have.Look for either an adjusting bolt and through bolt at the alternator.Loosen both and push the alternator back.If it has an extra pulley look for a belt adjusting bolt close to this pulley. You have to loosen the bolt that goes through the front of this pulley.(the bolt that holds the pulley to engine). Then turn the adjuster to loosen belt. Some of the later models have automatic belt tensioners. You have to put a wrench on the tensioner pulley bolt and relieve the spring pressure.I hope this helps!!!Please rate this answer. Thanks and Good Luck!!!
