Question about Ford Taurus

2 Answers

I have a 98 taurus that runs hot when I drive up to around 14 miles and my gage goes up to hot and I loose antifreeze out of the container. It doesn't leak until it overheats Also my heater isn't working either but my AC is. My mechanic gave it a quick look and said I PROBABLY have a cracked head.Could it be a thermostat at all since he is assuming it is a cracked head without checking anything else at all?

It is probably a stuck thermostat. Try replacing the thermostat first, before you let your helpful (to his own wallet, probably) mechanic tear into the engine.

Yes, always check the thermostat first before suspecting a cracked head. Thermostat is a cheap repair and worth a try. Be sure to check the old thermostat for operation by boiling in water.

How hot does it get in degrees F? Does the cooling fan turn on? Is the coolant boiling over?
As far as your temp gage, maybe you have air in the system? I would think as far as you have driven, if you didn't bleed the system, it should have worked it's way out?
You could have combustion gasses getting into the coolant because of gasket issue?

At 1/4 tank the needle starts to fluctuates. is this nomal?

fuel tank holds about 12-14 gallons and with the fuel low in the tank it sloshes around and moves the fuel level sender causing the fuel gage to fluctuate. there is a shield in the tank that surrounds the sending unit to stop this but sometimes they come loose and move or don`t work as effectively. how many miles to a tank depends on different factors. mainly on how you drive. in general you might get around 18-20 mpg.

if there is no noticable leaks might be head gasket. Check to see if a lot of vapour comming from exaust. You may have to get a pressure test on cooling system.

When heater/ac on..temp gage goes to hot when car idling but when driving holds at normal

Check to see if your electric radiator fan comes on when you are idling. You would be able to hear it if you open the hood. It should come on at around 200F and go off at 160-170F. If it is not working the car would heat to hot, when you are driving the air is forced thru the rad cooling off the antifreeze.

My temperature gage is going over in the red and my heat is not

Check the sensor which controls the cooling fans that cools the radiator it prevents the engine from over heating and allows the temp gauge to stay at normal range.recently had problems with my 2003 impala overheating it was the sensor had the thermostat replace as well.

Bought a 1996 Ford Taurus and it is running hot

If its boiling over then your coolant flow is blocked. I would start with replacing the thermostat sounds like its not opening.
