Question about 2001 Pontiac Aztek

Open Question

2001 Aztek battery drains overnight. Took to mechanic and he replaced the alternator and the computer. Battery has been replaced twice. I bought a charger to keep the battery up. I had a 1.9 amp drain until I removed the radio fuse. Now it dropped to 0.7 amp. Pulled under-hood fuse #48 and dropped to 0.4 amp. Cannot find any current flow from either fuse block now with both fuses removed, but still have 0.4 amp drain where the battery cable hooks up to the fuse block. Pulled all relays and fuses from both fuse panels. Any ideas?

SOURCE: engine fan keeps running

It's possible that the fan control relay is intermittently sticking causing the fans to run continuously. This can overheat and subsequently blow the fuse. Try replacing the relay and see if anything changes.

Hope this helps.

SOURCE: BATTERY DRAINS WHEN ENGINE OFF. REMOVING DOME FUSE STOPS THIS.

I'd bet on the electronic module that furnishes the 'dimming' feature has failed. It has a few semiconductors to accomplish the feature and one or more of them have failed.

There is a voltage draw from your battery while engine is not running.to prove this loose any one of your terminals.with all switches turned off including engine, disconnect and re-connect the loose terminal.if you get a spark then there is a voltage draw, find the wire and replace it

Dodge truck battery drains overnight. new battery installed

Seen this "mystery drain" many times. Check spark at the battery to see how big the drain is. For this simple test, blow away any (explosive) battery charging fumes. Leave one terminal on and gently touch the other to its post in fairly dark surroundings. Then try it again with the wires taken off the alternator. Your spark is now probably much less. Usually bad diodes leaking electricity backwards through the alternator cause this drain. Replace the alternator or the diode pack inside it. Some mechanics recommend actually measuring the drain.... hahaha. OK whatever.

Alternator tests good wont charge battery

I'm sorry to say it could be the computer.
The computer controls idle speed as well as alternator output.
If the check engine light is on you should get it scanned for trouble codes.

01 sunfire battery stays at 12.5v

I guess my first question is what is the alternator output at idle ?
You can't test an alternator by disconnecting the battery like we did 40 yrs ago with generators. The alternator needs the battery in circuit to perform. And now with computers, you can cook a computer by disconnecting the battery with the engine running.
You should have 3 wires coming out of the alt. The large red wire goes to the starter with a fuseable link. The other two go to the computer. They turn the regulator in the alternator on and off.
What is the voltage on that red wire with the engine running ?

Welcome to the world of BMW's. return the car to the seller. you got a bad one. You got an electrical short draining the battery. Bring a blank check and sign it over to the dealer. They're going to have to run through the entire electrical system to find the short. That work alone is worth more than the a used up 2001 325i.

it seems like something is draining your battery while the car sits overnight. causing the battery to get weaker and weaker putting stress on the alternator making it fail prematurely. the dealership will do a paracidic drain test where they'll find out what is draining your battery while your car sits overnight. it could be a bad module somewhere that's staying on when it shouldn't be.

CAR DIES OVERNIGHT!!!

When you test the alternator in the way you said you did. By removing the positive cable, you damage the ECU or computer. You are probably going to have to replace the CPU or ECU both mean the same thing. You also damage some resistors and other electronic components on the alternator itself when checking it this way. In the old cars , that did not happen because they had no CPU or ECU. Now it does.
