Question about 2002 Ford SVT Focus

1 Answer

My downstream o2 sensor is bad but I am having trouble locating it. I have been searching from the catalytic converter to the muffler. I have a 2002 svt focus with the Borla exhaust.

It is on exhaust downpipe, downstream of catalytic converter from the factory
\if you bought this used it is common for people to replace the exhaust with aftermarket units and there is often no rear O2 sensors
as such they just live with the check engine light

Diagram of o2 sensor location on a 93 Nissan d21

There really is no diagram.. The upstream O2 is in the exhaust manifold or pipe before the catalytic converter and the downstream O2 (if equipped) is after the catalytic converter in the Catalytic converter itself or the pipe just after the Catalytic converter.

Code p0420 acura m'dx

1996-newer (OBD-II) vehicles use oxygen sensors and a catalytic converter to reduce emissions. There is one O2 (oxygen) sensor in front of the catalytic converter (called upstream), and one behind it (downstream). When the engine is warmed up and running normally the upstream oxygen sensor reading fluctuates and the downstream one is fairly steady. In the case where both readings are fairly steady, a P0420 check engine light code is set.
Possible Causes: Oxygen (O2) sensor not working correctly
Damaged or leaking exhuast (pipe, manifold, catalytic converter)
Damaged catalytic converter
Diagnostic Help:
To diagnose a P0420 trouble code we begin by checking for exhaust leaks under the vehicle. Then use an oscilliscope to check the waveforms of both upstream and downstream O2 sensors. The front reading should vary, the rear should be steady. Replace as necessary. Check the rear Heated O2 Sensor. Check the catalytic converter, replace if necessary. If necessary, check for wiring and component concerns. See our article "Automotive Circuit Testing 101", if you need more assistance with this. Remember to refer to an model-specific repair manual for proper instruction.

Trouble code p0420

The P0420 code means that the catalytic converter efficiency is below threshold. Since there are two oxygen sensors, above and after the catalytic converter, they together generate signals which are used to monitor the efficiency. However, if the catalytic converter is bad, the sensor after the converter will generate steady results, without any fluctuations.
You can replace the catalytic converter to overcome this problem. However, there are chances of the P0420 code to come up if there is any leak in the exhaust or the downstream o2 sensor (after the converter) is bad. Ideally, before spending on cat, you should try replacing the downstream sensor, which you can buy at low price from online stores like oxygensensorworld.com and also inspect for any small leaks in the exhaust system. Since the converter can cost you more, think of replacing it only if needed.

Where is the location of an o2 sensor

there is a downstream one after the catalytic converter but before the muffler. there is another upstream one before the catalytic converter but after the exhaust manifold. take it to a muffler shop and ask them to put it up on a lift and show you where they are. you may have more than two if your car has more than one bank of cylinders.

Check engine light code is p0420 and it dont tell me where this sensor is what is catalyst system bank 1 low efficiancy

There is not a problem with a sensor there is a problem with the catalytic converter. P0420 sets when the downstream o2 sensor is either reading higher than expected or reading simular to the upstream O2 sensor. Either way it is usually the catalytic converter that is the source of the problem and rarely the downstream O2 sensor.

The Catalytic converter is located in the exhaust system under the car. Catalytic converters from either the dealer or a quality direct fit part from a reputable manufacturer are recommended. Cheap cats lead to lots of problems!

There are two oxygen sensors: one is upstream of the catalytic converter and one downstream of the catalytic converter. The oxygen sensor, or O2 sensor is usually located near the catalytic converter.Oxygen sensor downstream of the catalytic converter in the exhaust system on the back of the engine. ------- Thanks.Helpmech

2001 buick regal w/ bad ignition coil and clogged catylitic conv.

Hello! The defective ignition coil more than likely contaminated the downstream O2 sensor...If there isn't a trouble code and engine performs in a normal fashion, there's no reason to change the upstream sensor...

Senor oxgen 2nd bank downstream Where are they located

you have 4 o2 sensors and 4 catylitic converters. bank 1 sensors are located on the passenger side exhaust. #1 is before the catylitic converters and #2 is after. bank two, on the drivers side, has the same configuration, the downstream sensor is after the cats.

Code po430 not sure what maybe converter

One of three (3) possibitlies:
1. Catalytic Converter is malfunctioning.
2. O2 Sensor is malfunctioning. This will be the O2 Sensor located on the Catalytic Converter. However you should check and/or replace both sensors if needed.
3. You have an Exhaust Leak.
In Order of checking:
A. Check and Repair any Exhaust Leak.
B. Replace the O2 Sensor on the Catalytic Converter 1st. Also Known as the Downstream O2 Sensor or HO2 Sensor.
C. Replace the O2 on the Exhaust Manifold prior to the Catalytic Converter. Also Known as the Upstream O2 Sensor.
D. Replace the Catalytic Converter.
