Question about 1998 Oldsmobile Intrigue

1 Answer

1998 Oldsmobile Intrigue. Car almost died at intersection. Did want to stay running. Then slowly gained momentum. Drove home. turned it off. Restarted it no problem. Next day car won't start. Put in new battery, still wont start. Put in new starter, and tried to start. Broke of the little bell housing on top. Checked old starter. is fine. put in and loosened fly wheel to restart attempt and rule out transmission. Broke of bell housing again. Could I be putting the starter in wrong? Not much room for that I would think. Anyway, now my friend is suggesting it is the timing chain. Before I put more money into this I need to know why the starter broke and What else and how else should I be testing this car. Is the a way to know it is the timing chain?

WHEN THE CAR IS RUNNING PULL THE GROUND OFF THE BATTERY POST CAR SHOULD STAY RUNNING, BATTERY IS ONLY FOR ACCESORIES AND STARTING THE CAR, IF IT DOESNT NEED TO REPLACE THE ALTERNATOR

I put coolant in my car and it keeps empting out, nothing on the ground. car overheating, no smoke. got oil change drove home...now car wont start

The only thing I can think ofis there is a leak in the radiator, the resevoir could have a hole in it, or the hoses. Or worse, you could have water in your engine and the heads have cracked.

98 olds intriqe 3.8 chang oil lite on when car first started then goes off after a few minutes

Your "Oil Life Monitor" needs to be reset.
Turn ignition on, engine OFF.
Fully depress and release the accelerator pedal slowly 3 times within 5 seconds.
If CHANGE OIL indicator flashes, the system is resetting.
After indicator stops flashing, turn key off, then start vehicle. If light stays off, you are done. If it comes back on, repeat the entire procedure.
**Note** Oil life monitor should be reset, whenever you change your oil and filter.

Car keeps stopping

Sounds like you have a bad O2 sensor - typically what happens is the sensor will go into closed loop and stay there and once it cools down will open up and be able to start again - your car has two O2 sensors, it is best to replace them both - bet you notice your car getting crappy fuel mileage too. hopefully this helps you, as this is the most common problem - Also, clean your Mass Airflow Sensor, this is really easy to do and may help as well and should be the first thing you do before throwing a couple hundred dollars into new O2 sensors, use CRC mass airflow sensor cleaner available at auto zone or advance auto for about $10.00 a can, if you are not familiar with where it is located ask the guys at the auto parts store to show you - it takes like 15 minutes to do and requires only a t-20 torx bit - this part needs to be cleaned every 6000 miles.
