Question about 2008 Jeep Cherokee Grand

1 Answer

2008 jeeep grand cherokee stuck in first gear. At a stoplight I stepped on the accelerator and the engine reved up to 2500 rpm but would not shift into second. (It is an atomatic) The engine at that point dropped to 2000 rpm then increased to 2500 again. It kept repeatint this until I pulled into a gas station and restarted the Jeep. I have not had the problem again for two days.

You most likely tap the shifter to the side and it went into 1st gear! You would have had to tap it the other direction to get back into drive!

  • if A/T is this the 42RE box>? are you in DRIVE? or 1 or 2 gear.
  • does rpm rise above 3000 rpm > at your attempt? if not ,its a bad engine (weak)

The TCM commads the gear change, there is no valve body brain.
the TCM shifts to second with good inputs to the TCM
if the TCM sees bad inputs it will tell you, SCAN IT.

Reving up when in gear driving

check your trans fluid, if its been a while flush it and change the filter if its reving and your speed doesnt change (slipping) if your speed changes check the TPS and speed sensors on the trans as well when you change fluid.

I have an 03 Jeep Grand Cherokee v6 2x2 with 170k... I'm having a couple of issues... 1. Occasionally will have trouble with cycling through gears when getting on Hwy causing decreased, sluggish...

I would consider changing the vehicle speed sensor. When they go bad, they can really throw out a lot of bad data to the computer, resulting in unexpected behavior like you're experiencing. They're only around $20-$25. I hope this helps! :)

My 2008 Nissan Titan with 75000 miles will not accelerate over 2500 RPM's...

Have to check for codes first

All the items you mentioned spark plugs & such,
only you know when they were done last, if you have
a log book or good memory, not likely they would
cause the 40 mph thing

Not to go past 40 mph or not shift, doesn't sound good to me

You said it was knocking & you continue to use it !

Think I would have my check book handy & be ready to
get very upset.

2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee Shifting

Did you ever get that problem diagnosed? My 2008 Jeep GC recently and frequently gets stuck and does not accelerate past 1st gear. We have to pull over put it into park then shift into D-rive again. Then the transmission accelerates prperly. The only way we knew this was the big trucks on my job site have to do the same thing. A temporary resolve. Hoping it's not the transmission slipping and needing repair.

1999 jeep grand cherokee tacometer reading???

Cruising rpm even after the OD has engaged has a lot to do with the differential gear ratio and tire size.
There will always be a variation between different vehichles due to that alone.
To see if the OD is working, at about 50mph, lightly touch the brake pedal. If the rpms increase for a moment then the OD was engaged. (touching the pedal momentarily disengages it...good thing to know when hill climbing!

95 dodge dakota having hard time shifting.

Try a tranny service change a place that changes the filter the pan gasket and fluid not some of these quick places that just drain a couple quarts out of the tranny lines and thats it that wont help but a complete tranny service should help.

My transmisson makes a weezing sound when im at low speed

You sure its the transmission? Wheezing sound is usually the catylitic converter becoming plugged. Also...at 3-5K rpm you are not idling, you are reving the engine...(in that case, trans may be slipping or flairing between shifts, unless the unit is staying in one gear and just delaying shift till you reach that rpm. actual shift point should be close to 2,000rpm) I'd check the cat first.
