Most older models, have a hole on the bottom,of the ignition switch,,take a paper clip push up..an the ignition will come out,,if not,you have to remove the push plate under the steering wheel,,then take out the signal switch,3 screws wholes it in,then a screw, pull the switch out

Cant get key switch out of housing, on a 1974 chevy pick up.Trere are no screws or clips visible.

If you mean remove the ignition tumbler from the steering column, you will have to remove the steering wheel and lock plate, then you will need to remove the turn signal lever and screws, and then pull the turn signal switch up and out of the way, you should then be able to see the housing for the ignition tumbler down in the steering column. Look at the tumbler housing and there should be a small slot towards the end of the housing that you can put a small standard screwdriver into and depress a locking latch that is built into the tumbler. When this latch is depressed you will be able to pull the ignition tumbler straight out of the column.

Do you have a tilt wheel? If so you're only half the way there. The upper actuator is broken. And you got to get into the column further. As for the trick to get the cylinder in. Don't matter if you got a tilt or fixed wheel. Go to the top side of the column. About 2/3 the way down it you'll find the Ign Switch. A rod will be coming out of the top going towards the wheel area. Push it into the switch till the inst panel lights come on. That means that the Ign switch is in the 'ON' sopition. IE all the dash panel lights come on. There is a key on the tumbler that matches to a key in the ign gear. Than just incert the tumbler into the gear and turn it to lock it in.
If you got a non-tilt wheel then it sounds like the bottom of the tumbler is broken off and is still in the gear. If so do the same as above with the Ign Switch. That will align the key so you can take the broken part out and put the new Ign tumbler in.

Turn the key to the ON position. Underneath the ignition there's a hole you can put a long pick through to depress the retainer. After pressing in, you pull the ignition straight out. Look at the new lock and you should be able to figure it out. The paper tube on the ignition can be slid off. It just holds the buzzer onto the outside of the cylinder. Nothing will fly anywhere. Hope this helps. Hi there from Oyster River Vancouver Island BC, well i just broke my key switch. Key moves around nice and smooth but will not ingage the main electrical switch block further down the steering colum. I know there is a small indent or hole on the underside of the key switch. Have to drill it our slowly with a small drill that just fits the indent. After that you should be able to use a small punch or nail to press the spring loaded pin and the key tumbler assembly should pop out. The new key tumbler switch that costs about 46.00 will come with a small tube covering the key tumblers, do not remove this. You will have spring tumblers falling out on your floor mat. Once the old key tumbler assembly is out you should line up the new one and slowly press into the hole , read carefully on how to get the tube off, not sure if its cut and torn of slowly as you press in. If your not sure perhaps takeing it to a mechanic would be worth while. I am stuborn and taught many things from my Dad who has been a mechanic for over 40 years. Hope this helps you and I will be doing this same task next weekend. Right now I have taken the main switch thats further down the steering colum off and used a screw driver to move it and start the truck. I know it's Duke's of Hazard way of doing things but get me going for now. And the key still locks the steering, so if someone steel's my truck they can only go in cirlces or straight ahead. Then with that noise I can convice them to leave my truck alone with help from my shotgun...
