Question about 2001 Honda CR-V

1 Answer

Car was running great. mechanic did unorthorised work. adjusted tappets. also it stalls badly and revs by itself when hot or cold which it did not do before. i took it back and he said he fixed it which was a lie as i tied a piece of cotton to the cover and it is still there. I booked it in only for my timing belt which was not replaced!! i am female!!

I have some advice for you.If you have free long distance would you call me for a few minutes?I only 2 finger type so we'll go back and forth all day.Talk shouldn't take more than 10 minutes.I don't have caller ID because I can't afford it so I'm not going to pester you and I am married too.I also need some clarification about the timing belt.Greg 727 584 2554

By timing belt,do you mean the belt that winds around and you can see it on the alternator and a/c?If you do,that is a serpentine belt. The timing belt is inside the engine and would most likely require engine removal and a near complete teardown of the engine.Greg P.S.I would still like to hear what happened.Anytime after 10 AM EST.

Hi Greg just got your message thank you very much. Dont have long distance on phone. I asked the mechanic to replace the 200000 timing belt. He did not. Instead as i said he did unorthorised work- oil change, tightened down tappets. Now the car sounds so bad- the tappets are really noisy and it stalls so bad that it has become dangerous. As i said, I took it back as he promised to remove the tappet cover and fix the head but i tied cotton onto top and block and it was not broken so i know he didnt fix it. I spoke to another mechanic and he is positive the tappets are factory set?? and that they should not be touched at all??? Whats a girl to do?? I am in Australia. Thanks again for your time. What do you think??????????
    regards Jacquelin

Just a bit of advice for now.Do you have to sign a paper for authorization of work when you drop it off?We do up here, however I have them call me back after they determine what is wrong and have them tell me what they are going to do,so you should do that too.I don't know Australian laws as far as signing for work but I would still want to know what they're doing and for how much.I got ripped off once.I took my car in for clutch work, they called me back and said $500 and I said okay. When I went and picked it up I saw that they did all this other junk that I wasn't expecting, and I doubt they ever even started the car to move it.The actual clutch work they claimed they did was $100 of it.Now I have a good mechanic who is on the level. Before I answered your question I googled tappets to make sure I remembered what they were and they should not have been touched,I agree with that. The stalling could be a result of messing with the tappets because it probably altered the valve spacing. It could be a gas issue too but since he messed with the tappets, that is most likely the cause.I would call a Honda dealer, talk to a technician, tell them what happened, and see what they suggest.A dealer costs more for repairs, but the guy that told you the tappets shouldn't be messed with could be a good shop.So after you hear what the dealer recommends, call the second guy and see what he recommends and compare the 2 opinions and if he suggests what the dealer recommends, get a quote, also from the Honda dealer by the way. Also, are you sure you're not talking about the serpentine belt?I was in Australia once,Perth, and it seemed quite beautiful and clean,or was I in the right part of town? Please let me know what you find out.I don't have the multi-hemisphere calling plan either :() lol.Good luck! Greg

I forgot to add, when in doubt call the dealer or call around to a couple shops.Someone is always willing to give a free opinion over the phone to attract future business,at least here in the US they will.Greg

Why adjust the tappets when engine is cold?

adjust the tappets when cold allows you to get the engine running with out causing valve or engine damage
you do the final adjustment when hot as the stem expands in length and takes up the cold adjustment
if the cold adjustment is too close because you didn't make that adjustment the the valves will not seat properly when hot and will burn the edges of the valves

I have a 1.6 auto petrol renault modus reg55.After I turn on the engine if I push a hard break the rev falling down and the engine stop. But only at the first few miles. Any idea for this problem? Thanks

reg codes only work in UK, use real years..... so ROTW can tell.
please, tell what it does good and bad driving, idling , parked, moviing
hot and cold engine, full power from engine on hills.
stalling (it stalls) but when does it stall, under what conditions. hot or cold engine. only at stop lights hot. or>????
when an engine is cold the RPM is very high (iAC device) and it will not stall cold , if it does that is key.
if it never stalls hot. and runs perfect hot say so.
all these, clues build evidence. to what is wrong.
then we do tests.
PS: ever think to get that 60,000 mile (100km) tuneup>> now be it.

Engine stalls once engine gets hot

Thinking back to those days. Points and capacitor. I would replace the capacitor. Check the points and if they are pitted then definetly a bad capacitor. Is that fuel line
near the exhaust causing hot gasoline and vapor lock?

1999 honda civic transmission slow when hot replaced everything but transmission and works great till it gets hot about 5 miles

hot oil is thinner, ATF. cold works better, CLASSIC case.
my guess ,si the mean A;T pump pressure falls like a rock hot.
in all cars, FSM
all cars have these pages. that are on car tests for A;/T
(sure check all fuse...all time ,every time)
1: stall tests. on car, parked, running, test. brakes set hard.
yours i bet will fails this hot.
2; pump tests. (pressure guage)
id bet yours fails test 2 too.
and means...... its bad. the box is bad.
RTM read the FSM. do the simple test, and bingo.

the stall test takes no tools (if you have a tachometer) if not get one.

What is the valve settings

If you have adjustable tappets the setting are usually .010" hot inlet and .12" hot exhaust. Start at 12 and 14 cold and recheck when hot. If you have hydraulic tappets there is no adjustment as they automatically adjust when oil pressure is achieved

Mitsubishi 4D33 tappet clearance

Most engines having tappets that can be adjusted run .010" inlet and .012" exhaust hot. Best check to be sure but if you want to get the engine running add .002" to the measurements cold and readjust when you have the correct measurements. If you have hydraulic tappets just start the engine and oil pressure will adjust automatically

I have a tapping noise from my engine bay on an audi v6 tdi, i think it may be a tappet and have been told it may likely be fixed with an engine flush and service car has only covered 114000mls,the noise...

The cam followers are self adjusting,so an engine flushing agent and new oil (10/40 semi synthetic), should sort out the "tapping" noise,When the engine is hot run at 3500 revs for 30 secs to reset gaps
