Question about 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 2WD

3 Answers

2005 Silverado 2-WD (4-door model)...the front and rear passenger electric windows quit working at the exact same time. Doesn't work from the driver's or passenger door switches. I can hear a faint click in the rear door when attempting to raise or lower it, but not movement in the window and no motor sounds. Checked the breaker in the fuse panel beside the brake pedal - it's okay. So, what's common to both passenger doors that can cause this? Haven't pulled either door panel off yet cause I suspect the issue is elsewhere. Any suggestions?

It was recommended by another tech to replace the "window relay". First, don't understand what a window relay does that would only affect 2 of the 4 windows? Second, didn't think the 2005 Silverados used window relays? If so, where are they?

Ok, figured it out myself. All suggestions here on this site have been way off in left field.

Figured out it has a blown 50 amp MBEC fuse in the fuse box under the hood. I suspect a wiring harness short between the main fuse box and the MBEC. Thanks for the suggestions.

This was the closest to the solution and the most helpful. Sent real and accurate troubleshooting information whereas others were guessing at the problem (and their guesses were not even in the ballpark!). The initial fix was a blown "MBEC" 50 amp maxi fuse in the main fuse box under the hood. Hope this doesn't turn into a harness tracing issue.

    Thanks for the info.

Here is an electrical diagram of the right doors windows. Test motors applying 12v straight from the battery. Remember that 80% of the electrical problems the ground wire is what is at fault.

Good Luck!! Don't forget to rate this post!!

Hi! Please try this... You will need a B man to lift the windows while you control the button upwards and observe if it will go thru. If theres no respond even when the windows are pulled up then it certainly is a power window motor problem. You can try to buy one on the junkyard for cheaper price on the window motor replacement. Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa!

Beings as everything that stopped working is on the passenger side, I'd think some wiring got disconnected or broken.

What would causw both electric front windows on 2005 caliver not to work? Already change out switches in the middle of the consel??

I would be willing to bet be willing to bet that you did not check for power and ground at the window switches before replacing them.

Please read this article before continuing: What Else Could Be Wrong?

I am assuming that you have the 4 door model since you specified "both" and "front". So this advice will be based on that. If you have the 2 door version, this could be very different.
If the rear windows are working and the front windows are not, that eliminates both the power source from the circuit breaker to the master switch and the ground circuit to the master switch, The only "component" that could cause both of these circuits to malfunction at the same time would be the master switch. You could, however, have separate failures of each of the window motor circuits between the master switch and the window motors. GM has had more than their fair share of window motor/regulator failures. This type of failure is not likely to occur on both sides at the same time. This would more likely work something like: Passenger side quits, then several weeks or months later, the driver's side quits. You could also have broken wires inside the umbilical between the body and the doors. With the older cars with the master switch in the driver's door, one broken wire could take out both doors. This does not apply to your vehicle, however. Again, this would also not be one of those things that would cause both sides to go out at the same time.
So to wrap it up, you need to check for power and ground moving into and out of the master switch at the correct locations and under the correct switch operating positions. This will require you to get your hands on the wiring diagrams for your power windows so you know what is what.
If the power and ground is ok at the master switch, then you need to remove your door panels and check for power and ground at the window motor connector. If you are missing either power or ground at any point, then you will need to do a wiring repair. If power and ground is available at the window motor connectors, then you need to replace your window motors and/or regulator assemblies.

2-door diagnosis is similar, but you cannot eliminate "source" power and ground to the master switch by operating the back windows. You will have to test for it at the master switch.

My rear windows on my 2005 dodge magnum work sometimes i checked the fuse couldnt find one what could be the problem

Sometimes the problem is "Use it or Lose it." Because the rear windows are not used very often (especially if you have no children or other rear seat passengers) the window motor and/or switches develop a patina and do not make good electrical contact.
Try this: With the key switch in the ON or ACC position to energize the window, activate the switch and hold it while firmly slamming the door. The purpose here is to create a vibration while the electricity is flowing. Be sure and try both switches to eliminate all possibilities. This trick works quite often.
If you are successful, remember to cycle the windows every time you have the opportunity to keep them working. Remember: "Use it or Lose it."
