Question about Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme

Open Question

The battery on my 1970 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme (350 Rocket) seems to drain over a period of 3 to 5 days of no use. I've checked all the lights and other electrical devices to make sure they are 'nt functioning on their own, and I'm stumped. Is there a component that could be causing the discharge? Possibly a relay that may be hanging open when the ignition is off? Is this vehicle maybe notorious for this at this age? Any help would be appreciated.

Two possibilities: the battery may be self-discharging due to an internal short, or you have something that is drawing power when it should not be. To test the battery, disconnect the ground cable when you will not be using the car for 3-5 days, then reconnect it and see if it starts properly. If not, you need a new battery.
If it does start OK, then you need to further test things. Easiest way is to get an ammeter on the battery and see how much current is being drawn. It should be less than one-half amp (500 mA), if you are seeing 1 amp or more, that is your problem. Begin pulling fuses one at a time to see which one causes a big drop in the current. Look for things like the trunk light or glove box light staying on, or (if you have a power antenna) the antenna motor not shutting off.

Check for fuses/power/ground to the engine computer (or injector drive computer) whatever the case is.

Spark, fuel pump, and starter all are independant of the fuel injection computer.

Either the computer itself has gone bad, or it is not receiving power or ground, or wiring to the injectors might be bad...

Sounds like a RFID issue. Your key most likely has a chip inside of it. Most of the time people will have multiple keys on their key chain that can cause interference with the receiver in your steering column. Try using the one ignition key to start.

1983 oldsmobile cutlass supreme wont start

I had some issues when I changed my olds 307 to a slightly modified olds 350 rocket, it would start fine cold, but hard cranking or slow, painful cranking when hot. Alot of it was the carbureator was allowing too much or too little fuel into the engine. I rebuilt the carb twice. The first time I didn't have a full understanding of float level drop and measuring as far as bending the brass tangs. The second rebuild I finally was able to remove a large part of the hot starting issue, along with retarding the timing as well. But it still isn't gone.

I don't think there's a timer on your '94. It sounds like one of the door switches is stuck or not functioning. Try putting fuse back in. and opening and closing one door at a time to see if you can determine which door switch is bad. They are easily replaced. (Wintertime would make the switch operate even less optimally.)

Engine will Turnover but it will not fire up

To check injector pulse, you need 2 people. One is to crank the engine. The other is to watch the voltmeter connecting to the plug delivering the electrical signal to an injector. If during a period of cranking, there is no voltage displayed that means there is no injector pulse. Here is an image of connector port going into the injector to open its valve as needed.d63fc52.jpg

If I remember correctly that engine used a 350 trans. You will need to check bolt patterns on bellhousing to make sure there are no differences in bolt pattern but I believe they are the same. With a little work you could also stuff a 400 or a 700r4 (with overdrive) unit in there but you would need some mods to do that. Don't forget that tailshaft lengths vary depending upon where the unit came from so you may need to either change tailshaft or have a driveshaft made to fit.
