Have already tried what you suggest and the vehicle remains stuck in low 4x4. Apparently this is a problem that is going to require service by the dealer or a qualified mechanic so I'm needing to know what is exactly wrong with the vehicle so that when I take in to have it serviced I won't get scammed by being told the transfer case and/or transmission requires replacement. Surely, I'm not the first to have this problem with the type and year of vehicle. If someone could tell me the possibilities on the parts that may be required and the depth of service it would sure be appreciated... Please help!

I have a 2005 Yukon XL 4x4. It arbitrarily went into 4-wheel drive low and has remained stuck there. It cannot manually be changed back either to 4x4 high or regular 2-wheel drive by pressing one of the transfer buttons located on upper left side of the dash. None of the transfer button lights are working. Usually the button for the position of the transmission will remain on. The Service Display reads "Service 4 WD" then switches to "stability system disabled,? then back to "Service 4 WD.? I've tried to disengage the 4-low position with the vehicle in park, on a very slow roll (2-3 mph) and in neutral. It continues to remain locked in 4x4 low. Obviously it will have to be taken to a certified mechanic or the dealership for repair. What I don't want is to be told that a new transfer case or transmission is needed if the issue could be electrical or vacuum, and surely I'm not the first person this has happened to regarding this problem. Can someone help?

Hi there,

The most common reason behind a stubborn transfer case is the potential energy stored in a drive train that can';t freewheel

I'm sure you've tried all the neutral trick and driving it i sand to allow the wheels to spin easier.

So you need a way for the the drive train to release the the twisted stress that is binding the gears in the T-Case.

    Jack it up. Front first.
If they turn a bit as they leave the ground, the T-Case should release.

    If not get the back.

If you have jack stands, use them to hold the front end up while you jack the back.

With all wheels in the air, the potential energy turns kinetic and is released, the gears will unbind and let you get back to 2Hi

    Best regards

    Mike

Some vehicles go into and out of it while in motion. If you try in stationary vehicle it does not come out. Try to disengage the 4WD while the car is in motion. I also had one such SUV that unknowingly I drove for over 100 miles till told by a mechanic how to disengage the 4WD.

I have GMC yukon xl 2005 and I got problem on 4 wheel drive.

if i am not mistaking these have the vacuum module on the front differential check it it is probably bad common problem on these trucks from 96 and up if it is the electronic type it could be one of three things the switch on the dash, motor on transfer case, or the electronic module for the 4 wheel drive.

I have got 60k miles on my 2005 Yukon XL and want to know what maintenance needs to happen on the brakes, disc's and suspension? We pull a boat with this car and the car isn't driving as nicely as before.

Your owners manual will give you the required maint for the 60k check up...normally an O/L/F, tire rotation with high speed wheel balance , change the air filters and cabin air filters , new wipers front and back, transmission flush/ reclaim and install fluid (you said you tow) , have the coolant checked as well and if four wheel drive have the transfer case fluid checked or replaced. Have the shocks checked as well and make sure there is sufficient treadwear on the tires...low tread will greatly reduce the ride/handleing of big sport utilities.

Most of the time this problem is caused by the 4 wheel drive switch. Usually you can just replace the switch and that will fix the problem. I have replaced many of those switches and that has fixed the problem.

I have a 2003 Yukon XL that will switch from Auto 4 wheel drive to 4 high or 4 low on its own. The service 4 wheel drive indicator comes on when it is in 4 wheel drive. The fluids in the transfer case...

My 2003 yukon xl does the exact same thing. Sorry that I do not have a solution, but I figure its the same reason the daytime running lights always burn-out. The SUV in general has be an absolute POS and I will never buy another.
