Two common things with the push button 4x4 the button panel itself or the encoder motor loose its marks usually the buttons will all flash if the panels bad and it wont go into four wheel high if the encoder motor goes bad but if these dont sound like your symptoms you might have a bad transfer case module hope this helps good luck

Four buttons on dash for 4 wd. won't stay on 2 wd and it goes back to 4wd by itself

Sorry, but three possibilities. Most likely the 4wd actuator motor on the transfer case went bad. This is pretty common. They also encounter switch problems, but it sounds like your switch is doing what it's supposed to. One more thing, there is a 4wd control module, usually in the right kick panel. I'm betting on the shift motor though.

My 99 jimmy's 4x4 will shift from time to time but not without playing with buttons and turning the vehicle on-off. I've cleaned connectors on the dash acctuator and the module behind the kick panel but...

having had siimilar issues, I found my problem to be a non functioning solonoid that is the electronic switch for shifting from 2 to 4Hi....it was located under the battery tray. My mechanic had to follow the cord to find the solonoid, and once replaced shifts fine.

My 1997 jimmy will **** itself into 4wd and wont come out.

There is a vacuum switch on the top of the transfer-case on the driver's side that has gone bad. It's common on out jimmy's and will need to be replaced. Auto Zone or Parts Source will have that part and can give you the step by step instructions to replacing it and take about 15 min to replace. They go for around $25.00 at Auto Zone and $65.00 at the dealers and all you need is a 1 inch open end wrench i believe and patients. It's a tight fit to turn the wrench but you can do it and once loosen, just use your fingers. First disconnect the three vacuum line harness on the vacuum switch and then remove the switch. Once removed, install the new switch and vacuum lines and that's it. Good luck and buy and extra switch and keep it in the glove box. If you push the button for the 2wd, the transfer case will be on the 2wd selection and the front drive shaft will not have any torque to it but the front differential will still be engaged so you can drive it like that till you get a chance to replace the vacuum switch. Good luck and keep warm.

2006 dodge 5.9L cummins auto 4wd when i start the truck srv 4wd sometimes comes on but you can hear the 4wd try to kick in. when driving down road it will randomly try to kick into 4wd. on time it...

Most likely the motor on the transfer case. You have several modules/computers that work the transfer case shifting. Since it is trying to shift, it narrows it down to 2 modules. The transfer case module and the motor module(the motor has a module built in). I do diagnostics, I have the tools to do it. I eliminate other possibilities. Wires and such. I place more motors, than all the others combined. It is the most abused electrical part of a 4x4 vehicle. And it is on the bottom of the vehicle.

98 Chevy S10 4wd drive will not engage when button is pushed

your problem sounds like either the transfer case control module located where you hear the clicking sound, or the actuator on the transfer case itself.

try unplugging the transfer case control module and then plug it back in, try engaging 4wd again (make sure your in neutral, coasting at 1-2 mph might help as well) if it still doesn't work check the actuator itself to see if the actuator is trying to engage. if the actuator is trying to engage but doesn't, take the actuator out and check it for wear or damage. if the actuator seems fine and it responds to the buttons when pressed i'd go after the transfer case control module as the culprit. ran into that a few times on those s-10's. 3 out of 4 that i've seen were fixed with a new tccm. 1 of the 4 needed an actuator, check your local junk yard for a working tccm or actuator.

hope this helps!

sounds like the vacuum lines are either pinched or the vacuum pump is shot. try getting a mechanic look at the lines on and around your transfer case... also try checking the fuses for the 4wd selector. let me know how it goes

1998 jimmy 4 wheel drive problem

are any of the lites on the switch flashing? you may have a sticking 4x4 shift motor on the transfer case. with a helper, key on someone under vehicle at shift motor, one operating the 2wd button, give shift motor a rap with small hammer on metal portion of shift motor to see if you hear it trying to work. to access control module, remove plastic right kick panel and its right there. remove connector and inspect for corrosion or bad connection. also try park and neutral, may even have to be rolling a bit to disengage. let me know how you make out and will help further if i can. do you know what transfer case system you have? np1 or np4?
