Question about 1986 Volkswagen Cabriolet

1 Answer

My 86 Cabriolet 5 speed just had the shifting linkage rebuilt by a non vw mechanic using an ebay kit. It's somewhat better but still not right. When the shifter is left loose and pushed forward it goes into third gear not first gear like it should. You have to push the stick left then forward and maybe find first then sticks when shifting to second. Is there a way to adjust this spring? Or what else could be wrong. Thanks, Terry

Sounds like the linkage is misaligned, vw makes an alignment tool just 4 this problem. mine used to go into the wrong gear, and then I lost reverse I got so pissed off I slammed the shifter to the left and that fixed it, but I cant really recommend that you do this. Best of luck though!

Ford escord zx2 5 speed manual trans linkage layout

My wife's 5 speed manual ZX2 has had shifting problems but they are somewhat intermittant. I think it may be the bushings on the shifter rod one pair at the bottom of the shift lever and one where it connects to the transmission shift rod.
I can see a good deal of slack motion at the transmission end of the rod by looking at it under the hood with a flashlight while she wiggles the shift lever a bit.

1998 VW Beetle 5-speed trouble getting it in to reverse

I have a 1998 VW Beetle and when I first bought it, (used) shifting into first was the same action for shifting into reverse. They were so close I usually went into first when trying for reverse. I took it to a transmission shop and they replaced part of the shift linkage that is famous for wearing. It cost me maybe $60.00. Now she shifts like a new car.

My 86 VW Cabriolet needs a Fuel Distributor (Lumbar system?)... My mechanic (who doesn't specialize in VWs) suggested NOT buying one from a junkyard or that has been sitting around--yet there are **a lot**...

Your mechanic is right but if you can get a used one from a reputable salvage yard(yes there are some). you might save some cash. Problem is if it doesn't work you get to pay your mech. to do it again or as many times as it takes to get a good one. Are you a gambling man?

I have 1990 VW Cabriolet that does not like to go into first gear when down shifting. The 1st and 3rd gears seem close together.

I would check the many shifter bushing for being worn, they are a problem on these cars. You can find shifter rebuild kits on e-Bay. I've had alot of these cars and I've noticed the samething, until you slowdown to about 10-15 MPH, they don't want to go into first gear, I suspect that it was designed that way so that you don't get it into first gear when the car is going over a certain speed. The gears are very close together.

1991 manual jetta won't shift into 5th gear. can I replace the linkage myself or should I have a mechanic do it?

Unless you are familiar with working on VW's and have the Bentley service manual for your Jetta, it's probably best to let a VW mechanic or someone who is familiar with them to work on this problem. Special tools are required to properly adjust the shifting cables.
The problem may not be the linkage but a worn shifter. You will still need the service manual to do this right. You can get it at BentleyPublishers.com. Hope this helps.

Ok my 1986 Fiero 2m4 wont come out of reverse it was hard 2 shift gears all day yesterday until about 4 o clock now the transmission shifter just moves around freely but like i said its stuck in reverse...

Manual or auto?

It's gotta be the cable/linkage. You just have to inspect them and see if something is worn or snapped. They get old and crusty and need to be replaced eventually. I had to replace my shift cable on my 86 se with the 5-speed getrag.

Hopefully it's not the actual tranny....?

How do I replace the starter in an 86 vw cabriolet?

If it's a 5 speed, you will need to disconnect the battery at the positive terminal. Jack the car up and support with jack stands. You will need another jack to sit under the oil pan, due to the fact that when removing the starter, the bolts through the starter go thru the front motor mount. Disconnect the large wire from the starter, usally a 13mm nut, and unplug the smaller wire. Remove the upper and lower bolts going thru the starter, usally a 17mm bolt head, or an allen head bolt. Remove the starter, you may have to jack up or down the motor to get the starter bolts started into the front mount. If it's an automatic, the starter is mounted between the engine and the firewall. The 5 speed starter is between the engine and radiator.
