SOURCE: hood latch cable broke how do I open hood?

You'll have to remove part of the grill and try to access the latch from inside. Yoy may have to unbolt the entire thing, but make sure you mark it 1st so that you know how to put it back in the EXACT spot it came from. Then once out, you can extracate it from the latch pin on the hood, replace your cable and start fresh. Good luck, this is one of those things that no matter how long you've been working on cars, its always hard to do!

Hood does not open

The latch could be stuck or the cable broke. You might try bumping the hood with someone pulling on the release.
Otherwise you may have to remove the grille to access the latch.

I have a 2000 ford explorer and the hood release is not working and we can not get the hood to open for a smog check. any advice would be helpful, thanks. Jeannine

Remove the in side latch to see where the brake is at. If it is broke close to the handle you can cut the housing back. Then use vise-grips to pull the cable. If it is broke at the latch you will need to unbolt the latch.I think you can do this with a 1/4 inch drive and swivel sockets working through the grill.

2001 Ford Explorer--can't open the hood with under dash pull. Mechanic called, wants to take out part of the grill to get at the latch.

You don't have to take the grille apart, besides, you can't take it apart without the hood open, so what he wants to do is smash it open. If you get another vehicle just like yours to look at under the hood, you can see exactly what to grab with a small hook or wire, you can pop the hood this way, some fords have a pinhole for popping the hood, might take you an hour to do it, but it can be done. Check it out, hope this helps.

98 explorer hood latch does not work

Hello.
  • Unattach the release handle from the dash and disconnect the cbale and get someone to use the palms of there hands to tap on the hood while pulling the cable with pliers.
  • If this fails then you will have to go through the grill and do the same at the latch
  • If this fails then you will need to remove the bolts holding the latch to the radiator support to get the hood open.
    Regards, Joe

What would the problem be if the hood won't unlatch on a 2002 ford explorer?

milescrm55, I have had a problem like this before, the latch you pull has a cable attached to it to unlock the hood. The cable may have broke or they can become stretched out over time. You can have some one try to pull the latch and you tap on the hood with your fist lightly, to see if the hood pops then. I hope this helps in anyway.
