It is a 1995 buick century 3.1 6 cyclinder with about 95,000. It has had a complete engine overhaul. The problem started only after the fuel pump was changed. It did not happen before the change. As a matter of fact this is the second fuel pump because we thought the fuel pump was bad, but it still has very low pressure. Do you know where we might find a diagram of the fuel pump?

I have a 1995 buick century 3.1 6 cyl engine. Recently we changed the fuel pump and now the car has very low pressure and only runs smoothly when it idles. If you give it any gas it backfires or hesitates. It never did this before we changed the fuel pump. We even changed the fuel pump again because we thought the new one could be bad. We are still getting the same results. Does anyone know where we might get a diagram of the fuel pump and its compents.

If that weird problem appeared only after you installed a brand new pump (which i suppose is the correct one for your car) then the problem is in the rubber connectors that connect the pump to the fuel line - they are frayed inside and the loose parts have blocked the flow.
Replace all rubber parts from the fuel line and blow air at high pressure on the lines to expel the loose rubber residues.
BTW the the pump is an enclosed unit, it can't be serviced.

Missing and backfire.

Backfiring is usually associated with a lean condition. Is fuel pressure correct? Is this vehicle TBI and are both injectors working properly? If timing related it should spark rattle under load and the timing would be way out and not run/start well at idle

Just before a car runs out of gas it will speed up the idle (rev up) backfire and then die. You are probably experiencing a lack of fuel. Put a pressure gauge on the fuel rail that goes to the fuel injectors. It should probably read between 5 and 15 lbs. If the pressure is bad, it could be a fuel pump or clogged fuel filter. Obviously it is cheaper to start by changing the filter. The line could also be clogged. If it has good pressure all the way up to the fuel rail, it could be clogged fuel injectors.

Trouble starting and backfires

I suggest you have a fuel pressure leak down test run on this truck, the pressure check valve that is part of the fuel pump may be defective, this lets the pressure bleed down and this causes your kind of starting issues. The fuel pump is located inside the fuel tank which must be dropped out to replace the fuel pump module assembly.

My 1995 windstar 3.8 litre came to a stop barely ideling then it stalled. I stared the engin again and it has been runnig for the last 24 hours. could it be a fuel pump if so where is it located?

Before you would consider the fuel pump, you should change the filter, and then check the fuel pressure with a gauge, on the fuel rail, near the injectors. You should also check that there is no vacuum or pressure building up in the gas tank, by listening when you open the cap. If there is, then the purge valve is not working right.
There is a long list of possibilities, like EGR valve, timing, etc., with the fuel pump low on the list.

Backfires and slow accelration and lurches in fourth gear but no

I'd have fuel pressure tested, and if low, try changing fuel filter , if no improvement in pressure, change fuel pump. Pressure test will at very least confirm you have necessary pressure to supply engine as required.

engine can be out of time
low fuel pressure
or can be a burn valve
need to check ignition timing and fuel pressure to see if they are ok first
