Question about 1986 Ford F 250

The rear brakes in my '86 F-250 don't work. I hit them hard, but they won't lock up even in gravel. The shoes are good, and there are no fluid leaks evident. It just seems like the shoes don't press against the drum. Pedal feel is firm. What could be causing this? Thanks, John

1.. Have you adjusted the rear Brakes?
2. you do relize that most of the breaking is done by the front brakes. hope this helps

Can't get rear brakes to lock up.


the problem here may be that you have machined the drums with out fitting over sized linings
if the diameter of the drum is not consistent with the diameter of the shoes then when the brakes rare applied then only a very small portion of the shoe actually contacts the drum surface to test the load sensing valve just disconnect it from the axle as this indicates full load

Yes you can fix it. Jack wheel off ground after loosing lug nuts. Take off wheel. Pull drum if it wont come off hit it around the center with a hammer. If it has never been off there might be little washers on the studs break them off. If drum still won't come off there are holes in the plate behind the drum the shoes can't get past the ridge on the drum so you take two screwdrivers through the hole and lift up on the lever and use the other one to unscrew back off the shoes by moving the wheel up or down Remove drum take a bunch of pictures of the shoes so you can see how to put them on. Remove shoes. It would help to buy some cheap brake wrenches.Spray the brake line with some type of penetrant and remove brake line. Unbolt wheel cylinder and install new one. Replace brake shoes and springs Have drums turned or replaced if bad Install drums and bleed brakes.Start at the passenger rear fill it with brake fluid put cover on and have someone pump the brakes until the pedal is as hard as it will get Hold the pedal down and loosen bleeder screw on back of wheel cylinder brak fluid will squirt out and when it stops him holding his foot on the floor tighten the screw and pump the brakes up hard again bleed it about 8 more times go to the drivers rear and do the same there then the front passenger side and then the front drivers side make sure the brake fluid stays full if it empties out of the master cylinder to the bottom you will have to start over12_9_2011_6_45_35_pm.jpg

Did complete brake job on 1997 Ford Escort wagon no abs rear shoes, drums, lines, wheel cylinders,even changed the block at the rear were the lines go in & out of. Front lines hoses pads, caliplers...


is brake pedal hard to push down without engine running ,if so proceed to step two and thats to start engine and then push on brake and if pedal softer to push then the servo is working ,now if excessive pedal travel with engine running then remove the rear drums ,make sure the outside lip is cleaned out and then adjust the brake shoes manually till they rub when you turn the drum ,this will cure it but remember that it has to bed in of course new pads brake disks ,new shoes and drums it has to bed in so give it a chance .

I have a 03' Chevy S-10. The rear drums don't want to slide off brake shoes. I don't see a cylinder adjustment boot behind the drum, just a steel plug located at the top on both sides that...


they are kind of hard to take it out ,that happen because the brake shoes wear off the droms only exactly where the brake shoes are with the usage of time and create like a border right on the edge of the droms,try to desadjust the brake shoes by the cylinder which is inside of the drums and a slot below the axle it located right at front of the cylinder to be adjust it,if that does not work you will have to try to pull the droms out by the hard way.hit it all around the droms with a hamer then
try to pull them out, you will have to do this several times until they comes out. good luck

Rear breaks lock up at slow speeds. when traveling from 0 to 10 MPH if breaks are applied abruptly 1 or both of the rear wheels will lock up before the front breaks seem to engage, especially on wet road....


`right one of two problems ,firstly remove the rear drums and check for a fluid leak as a slight smear of fluid will cause the exact problems you describe ,if the rear shoes are dry then push the cylinder each side to make sure its not seized ,secondly check the load sensing valve which will be under the chassis above the back axle,if that appears ok and not seized then remove the master cylinder and take the piston out and check the rubbers and the cylinder bore for wear ,but mainly this fault is caused by the brake shoes having a slight amount of brake fluid contamination and it causes the brakes to grab

Bleed your brakes, starting with Right rear, left rear, right front and ending with left front. You have air in the lines or a bad master cylinder. Bleeding is the cheaper of two options.

Hi i own a 1998 chevy siliverado and my brakes are not working adequately, im not losing break fluid so im unsure of the problem


If the pedal seems really hard to push, you could have a bad brake booster. If the pedal feels OK but there is not much action from the brakes, there could be an internal leak in your master cylinder. If your vehicle is equipped with Antilock Brakes, it could be a bad Hydraulic Control Unit.

i think your aware of how to change the brakes if im right and your problem is the rusted drum doesnt want to come off the only way to get the old drum off is to remove adjuster plug from behind drum dustshield and adjust the shoes so that there not even close to the braking area of the drum then try and wiggle the drum off of the assembly if it is not coming off then you need to use the old nylon hammer on the drum and i mean you must hit the drum from side to side trying by hand to wiggle the drum off its a tight fit and you need to strike the drum on the face not on the fins not wanting to damage with persistance and care and patience you will eventually be able to remove the drum to service brakes take care and good luck with it

Rear brakes lock up


Not wanting to be too general but at least trying to help I would suggest looking under the back end, and specifically at the rear backing plates and to the insides of the rear wheels, to see if you notice any fluids dripping. If these are drum brakes, then you could very well have either a wheel cylinder leaking brake fluid, causing the brake shoe linings to swell up, or it could be a leaking axle seal, allowing differential gear lube out, which will also cause the linings to swell, and minor braking will cause that particular side to lock up.
If this vehicle has rear disk brakes, or was just recently changed from rear drum brakes to rear disk brakes, it is possible that the proportioning valve in the brake line was not changed to match with the disk setup.
Drum brakes operate at approximately ten pounds per square inch pressure (10 PSI) whereas disk units operate at a lower pressure of about 2 PSI.
Just some things to look at. Some brake fluids have no smell, others are very distinctive in odor, and differential gear lube has a very distinct odor...not hard to miss once you've smelled it.
