Question about Pontiac Bonneville

Open Question

I have a 1999 Pontiac Bonneville, 4T65E transaxle. It has a 3.8L K engine, and 206,000 miles on it. The Transmission only has 1st and second gears, will not shift into 3rd-4th. and P0756. It also had a loud whine like a bas power steering pump at idle and it changes with engine speed. I removed the trans and tore it down, I found a stripped 4th gear clutch hub and shaft/and sun gear. I used to be a GM tech, but since i work for a Ford Dealership. I rebuilt these units before but long ago. Whati need to know is, with 200K on it what would you reccomend replaceing (other than the obvious) while i have it out and apart to stave off the "known issues" I have already gotten a new PCS, 1-2 and 3-4 shift sols. The fluid was old but not burnt, and without my Service info i cant see if the 4th hub/clutch would cause a no shift from 2nd. Thanks Rick

I found the issue It was the OD stub shaft. splines were stripped. and it was limited it to 1-2 only. I took it out and overhauled the trans, and installed a new shaft. Thanks

SOURCE: transmission won't shift to 2nd and 3rd gears goes from 1st to 4th.

Doesn't sound like a simple fix. I would suggest having it serviced.

Sounds like a bad countershaft bearing. The trans will need removed and disassembled to fix it.

SOURCE: My 1994 Ford Explorer automatic transmission won't

Hi there,

As your Auto transmission is fully electronic, it could be anything from faulty sensors sending incorrect signals to the trans computer, or faulty internal components. Your best bet is to have the trans computer scanned for 'fault codes' (as the computer monitors and retains all faults) by your local Ford dealership.

This process will identify the likely component/s which are causing this problem.

My guess is, there may be a problem with the 2nd clutch (yes that's right, automatics have internal clutches!), input and/or output shaft switches sending incorrect signals to the computer.

But, there could be so many other possibilities....so, I recommend you get the codes scanned and go from there.....

If the whine is there than the main bearing is already worn adding fluid will not save it, you will have to swap it or rebuild it. sorry i know you were hoping for something better.

My son replaced the power steering pump. My transmission will not shift out of second gear. No problem before and now odemeter doesn't work

Look right below the power steering pump and there should be 2 wires going to a sensor on the transmission-transaxle. this is the speed sensor and it is located where the right side axle goes into the transaxle. he might have accidentally disconnected it or possibly broken the wires. after repairing this you will need to reset the check engine light and that will clear any transmission codes. Good luck! Scott.
I will keep an eye out for you if you need more assistance.

1999 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP. Mileage 132000. 1 to 2 shift normal. Trans. will not upshift into 3rd. gear, goes to 4th. It will downshif to 3rd. from 4th. When the trans. get hot from stop and go...

If tranny fluid is clear and at normal level, then the issue is with the transmission - it is getting ready to go sayonara.

Better get that fix before you get stranded.

When shifting from second to thrid it has a skipping or bucking.drop transmission pan,no metal or shavings in pan

You should have the computer scanned at a transmission shop or a dealership. If you get a code P1811, that is the 'max adapt long shift' code. That means that the Electronic Pressure Control solenoid may be going bad. Normal wear and tear on the clutch material can also cause this code. Basically, it means that the transaxle is taking longer than 0.65 seconds to shift, and the computer commands maximum line pressure to avoid burning out the clutches. I have had good success with installing a shift kit on several of these transaxles (4T65e) to remedy this problem with no further issues. Visit www.transgo.com and look for distributors in your area. The shift kit you need is the SK 4T65e shift kit. The kit comes with very good instructions. It is not a difficult job. If you can drop the pan and change your own fluid, you can install this kit.

Some owners of the above models equipped with a Hydra-Matic 4T65-E transaxle with a Julian Date prior to 0045 may comment on a whine noise in PARK and/or NEUTRAL or a Service Engine Soon or Service Vehicle Soon lamp that is illuminated. Upon investigation, a DTC P0741 or P0742 may be found.

Cause:
The above condition may be due to drive sprocket support bearing fluting and/or bearing failure.

Correction:
Replace the drive sprocket support bearing. Inspect the channel plate and drive sprocket for any abnormal wear, Turbine shaft for cut seals and/or nicks, and chain for excessive play due to failed bearings.

Important:
When installing the new bearing, the part number MUST be visible (facing upward). Before installing the drive sprocket, lubricate the bearing assembly with J 36850 assembly lubricant.

Refer to the 4T65-E Unit Repair Section for the installation procedure.

Service Part Information:
Part Number: 24214158
Description: Drive Sprocket Support Bearing

Parts are currently available from GMSPO.

Its possible that you can use a voltmeter to test for power and ground at the TCC solenoid connector and also resistance across the solenoid. The scan tool is helpful in pulling the codes, commanding the TCC on and off and monitoring the state of command while driving.

Hope help with this (remem, ber comment and rated this).
