Could be a bad earth connection. What happens then is. The directional blinker uses the positive of the other one as an earth. When it happens again. Put your foot lightly on the brake pedal. And check if the blinking speed changes.
Try replacing ALL directionals for the side that is not working properly. That fast blink in the back usually means bad bulb, but could also mean bad relay.
Can you elaborate? You say emergency flashers work, but FR directional does not. Does the bulb-in-question light when the E-flashers are going?
Normally with the blinker blinking really fast, it's telling you that one of the bulb is blown, front or rear signals. Check your fuse, and fuse relay to see if it would fix the promblem
