Question about 1995 Mitsubishi Galant

3 Answers

Going up hill to my house and around an S turn, the transmission suddenly failed. it was in drive, but was acting like it was in neutral. It hasn't been able to go into drive at all since then, and park is the ONLY gear that will work. the shifter will go into all of the other gears, D,R,N,1,2... but while in any gear will act like it is in neutral. I am trying to figure out what the problem is exactly, so I can fix it.

Did you ever find what was wrong? I got the same problem last nite. Fluid, half shafts , and levers ok, but tranny will not engage in any gear (shifter moves just fine)

First, look at the fluid, it must be running in park, and level. Also, note the color and smell of the fluid. Normally it's a red and has a slight smell, if it's black or brown, and smells burnt, you have burned up clutches. If the level is good, and fluid looks good, something internal broke. (i.e planetary gears)
If you have never done a automatic transmission before, they are difficult and usually require special tools.

the fluid was fine, I've done manual tranny's before, but never an automatic. is there any thing else that I can check before I take the transmission apart or something I can try to bleed?

Il tell you "exactly" what the problem is,,,the gearbox it very low on oil,,,,if there is any left in it that is??? check the auto gearbox "dip stick" then top it up to just under the full mark start the engine and run through all the fears with the brakes held on you dont need to drive the car yet,,,,when the motor is hot check the gearbox dip stick again top up if needs be,,
now try it up the road,,,,i bet it drive's just fine now!

I checked the tranny fluid, and it was fine. Is there gearbox somewhere else and what kind of fluiddoes it use?
(If the gearbox is another term for transmission, don't laugh at my naivety lol)

    hi its miket756

i dont make fun at anybody,,if you dont know thats not your fault is it,,and yes a gearbox is another name for a transmission,,,be that a "stick shift or an auto box" in the uk we call them all gearboxes!

right if the gear oil is full up and you still havent got any drive have a look under the car when in drive and the engine running with the brakes held on!!! look to see if the propshaft is turning,,if it is you have a broken axle ie a half shaft busted if its not turning then you may be lucky and have a gear selector leaver thats fell off the box

or the drive plate may have sheared off the torque converter or even the bolts may have fell out,,,wip out the starter motor and you will see the torque converter if you can turn it with your fingers its broken off the drive plate,,,

its never wise to laugh at people who need help,,,one day it will be yourself needing help,,,what go's around,,,comes around!

My 2001 Lexus rx300 acted like it was in neutral all of a sudden. What is the chance I will have to replace the transmission? Could it be the transmission fluid needs flushing?

always treat auto replacement as an absolute last resort
There is a servo/solenoid controlled torque converter clutch that connects the converter up and they do fail from electronic or wiring problems (indicated by the sudden loss of drive)
run the fault codes first to detect such a problem
if the transmission oil has not been changed in the last 60,000klms then that will only help if it is done soon
Take it into an accredited auto transmission specialist shop for a proper diagnosis and a quote
I suspect that you will find it is the clutch control ( servo/solenoid or TCM unit ) and that the cost to fix will be considerable cheaper than a new transmission

Why does my 1995 Volvo transmission stop going into gear after it's hot?

1) How's your fluid level?

2) When did you last replace your filter?

3) When it shifted, did it go trough all the gears as you accelerate or did it just stay on one gear and never shifted?

4) How's reverse, does it slip out too after 2 - 3 min?

5) As you first able to shift into gear, you can drive it for 2 to 3 mintues and it just suddenly slip out of gear?

.... could be a number of different things. Maybe even burnt out clutche(s) inside your transmission

Get a friend to open the hood and look at the engine go up or down in the engine compartment when the brakes are firmly applied and switching between reverse and drive. Look for the motor mounts for behavior where tears exist in the rubber.

Will it hurt to drive a 2007 dodge carivan with a V6 down hill in neutral

It could possibly damage the transmission as the transmission needs lubrication to keep from damaging internal parts and the oil pump only runs when the transmission is in a forward or reverse gear, not in neutral. Why would you want to have it in neutral going down a hill anyway ? Good Luck ! MICHAEL...

check the fluid level and for a clogged filter in the trans. Is it making a buzzing noise like it's sucking air?

Not a sensor or solenoid problem.
