Question about 2000 Chevrolet Venture

Open Question

I had to have an emissions test on a 2000 Chevy Venture and it failed miserably. Several codes came up on the on board computer. P0101: Mass or Volume Air Flow Circuit Range/Performance Problem, P0171: System too Lean, P0449: EVAP Control System Vent Valve/Solenoid Circuit and P0742: Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Stuck On were all the codes that came up. How do I repair these without taking the van to a mechanic? Any help will be appreciated.

Yes, replace the MAF, then check if the lean condition goes away. It should.

MAF's are sensitive to cleaning. Sometimes it works, other times it doesn't.

SOURCE: how do i fix emission codes p1131 p1151 p0171

TSB
05-22-6
ISSUE:
Some 2001-2003 F-150, 2004 F-150 Heritage and 2001-2003 E-150/250 vehicles equipped with a 4.2L engine may exhibit the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) on with diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) P1131 and/or P1151 (system too lean bank 1 or 2). This condition may be due to leaking isolator bolts/port gaskets in the upper-to-lower intake manifold mounting area. This condition is sometimes intermittent and may not be apparent on a warmed-up engine.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

Perform a self test. If DTC P1131 and/or P1151 are the only codes stored in the powertrain control module (PCM) proceed to Step 2. If any additional DTCs are present, follow normal diagnostic procedures found in the PC/ED Manual.

Remove the upper intake and replace only the port gaskets (9H486) and isolator bolt assemblies (9S479). The new isolator bolt assemblies use a rubber material that is green in color, do not install the old isolator bolt assemblies with the black rubber material. Do not replace any other intake parts or gaskets.
While the upper intake manifold is removed, check the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) orifices that are pressed into each primary port of the lower intake manifold. If any of the orifices are plugged with soot, clean and unplug them with a pick and solvent.

SOURCE: code p0449.

GM uses an EVAP solenoid that is located under most vehicles near the gas tank and connects to the charcoal filter can. Codes can be set and will drive you crazy trying to figure out if you have a bad gas cap, broke lines---this is where they try to get you to do a smoke test, or you just think the vehicle is no good! Relax, it is usually an easy fix and one GM has known about for years but continues to make easy money off people who cannot do basic maintenance. Now one code that comes up is usually P0449, along with maybe a warning to check the gas cap to see if it is on tight! GM will gladly read this code out for you for around $98.00 and then fix it for another around $100.00 which includes the EVAP part which if you buy at their parts dept. will cost you $32.00 and my dealership parts man told me they sell one a day! It is easy money for them and obviously a defective part they keep using for the last 10 or 15 years but hey, its money in their pocket. Here is how to fix it with ONE single common screwdriver! Get under the vehicle after putting on the parking brake. The EVAP solenoid is easy to spot near the gas tank and it has one electric connector which disconnects by releasing the plastic clip and pulling the connector out. It also has ONE air line connected which goes to the charcoal cannister which also can be removed with the one screwdriver. The whole EVAP solenoid and air can can be removed with the screwdriver which makes it easier to unplug the electric and air line. Get a replacement from the dealer as they certainly are familiar with this part as they sell LOTS of them. Then just go under and plug the new one in and the problem is solved. Now if you do not have a tool to reset the codes, try the local parts places as most of them will do a reset for you.

P0101

Here is the definition of the code.

P0101 GMC Description The Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor is placed in the stream of intake air. It measures the intake flow rate by measuring a part of the entire intake flow. It consists of a hot film that is supplied with electric current from the Engine Control Module (ECM).

The temperature of the hot film is controlled by the ECM acertain amount. The heat generated by the hot film is reduced as the intake air flows around it. The more air, the greater the heat loss. Therefore, the ECM must supply more electric current to maintain the temperature of the hot film as air flow increases. The ECM detects the air flow by means of this current change.
Faulty mass air flow sensor
- Intake air leaks
- Dirty mass air flow sensor
- Dirty air filter
- Mass air flow sensor harness is open or shorted
- Mass air flow sensor electrical circuit poor connection

Engine light came on

The engine or "check engine" light, comes on when one of several systems that control emissions or engine operation fail a start up test or when system component fails during operation. The On Board Computer (OBC II) will detect these failures, turn on the check engine light, and store a "fault code" that identifies the failure. There are several auto parts store chains and service shops that will "scan" your OBC II for free and tell you what the fault code means.
