That broken wire is the signal wire from the chip/transponder key that sends the signal to the anti theft module to allow the engine to start, with that wire hooked up correctly the starter will be locked out and won't spin the engine over.

On the key there is a diode theat the key connects inside the cylinder lock from the lock cyclinder their is two white wires that thread down the collum to the maim collum they plug into the main harness. If this white set of wires is broken or cut anywhere or connected to ground then the security system won't let the car start. A new tumber comes with the white wires and the contacts that touch the key. I remove the new contact wire assembly from the old tumbler and install the new on that came with the new tumbler. I don't use the new tumber as I don't have a key with the diode in it thats right for the car. with the old key in the old tumbler with the new wire and contaacts all assembled the car should reconize the key and run like it used to,

How do i unlock my steering wheel on my 2003 e250 it makes the pinging noise when i open the door but the key is not in it

Assuming your truck starts and runs fine, then the problem id the Key Warning "Switch" It's really not a switch, but just a copper tab that grounds to the key when it is inserted. It either came unseated and is grounding out on the steering colimn, or brole off and is grounding. You can do a couple of things:

Remove the plastic steering column cover to expose the key tumbler

Then, locate the grounding tab. It is at the end of a small black wire.

Then, either :

1. Clip it back on

2. Tie wrap it back on if the clip is broke.

3. Order a new one from the dealer and replace it.

4. Use electrical tape to keep it from grounding or just snip it off and don't worry about having the Key In chime.

My 97 oldsmoble starts then dies then the security light comes on and car wont start after about3 hours or so it starts up

What you are experiencing is a "short term theft" issue. The vehicles theft system can not detect the ignition tumbler code, but knows you have the correct key because you can start the vehicle.
The key tumbler may have gone bad or the wiring to the tumbler may have a problem. In either case, you should take the vehicle to your local GM dealer and ask them to check the theft system for you. If the tumbler needs replacement, the technician will have to perform a "code learn" for the new tumbler in order for the car to run properly.
Good luck.

Driver's door on 1987 MB 190 cannot be locked w/the key

You didn't say if the key allows you to lock/unlock the passanger side door. If not, then your key is going bad. Otherwise, you need to replace the door lock tumbler. This is not to difficult, but takes about 2 - 3 hours to remove the inside panel and doorhandle assembly. Take pictures as you go to remember how to reinstall everything. You have a couple of options: 1. you can swap out the tumbler from the passanger side if it works, 2. you can replace the tumbler with a new one, or 3. you can replace the entire handle with a used one that has a key. With the amout of work into getting to the tumbler, my vote is for a new tumbler and key.
