If you have no idea then this is not something you are going to wanna attempt. It is a very delicate proccess. And if you get it wrong you will ruin your engine. By ruin i mean blow it up. The engine has to be exactly in time or it will ruin your valves

What is the timing for a 1994 mercury tracer trio. i belive i have to replace the timing belt and the water pump. im not sure tho bc the feul cut off came on first than after i filled it up it went off. im...

First check to make sure the fuel shutoff is still on. When the engine jumps timing it is usually caused by either the water pump bearings went bad and seized or fell apart. The other is when the belt is old or excessively worn and breaks. Timing marks are dependent on engine size. 1.9 engines have single cam and all marks point straight up. 1.8 is more detailed depending on if it has 1 or 2 cams.

I have a qustion regarding Mercury Tracer 94 1.9l If timing belt breaks does teh vaulve have clearance or no clearance. Thank you for your help.. Alina

Hi Alina,
From what I've been able to find, there were two versions of this engine. One had square teeth on the belt and another had round teeth. If it is the one with round teeth on the timing belt, it is an interference engine and the valves most likely will be damaged if the belt breaks.
Hope this helps,
Dave

1995 mercury tracer 1.9l wont start after new serpentine belt

The timing belt should not have been affwcted. Sounds like you have everything chk'd and accounted for.. The best way to chk the cam and crank is a compression test.

Does a broken timing belt permanently damage a Mercury Tracer

depends on the Engine in the car.

1.9L SOHC (SEFI on Valve Cover)engine, no, they are non-interferance engines, put a new timing belt on it and go.

1.8 DOHC engine, yes, it will destroy the valves, head, pistons, and if really bad, the block too. These engines are interferance engines, where the valves just barely miss the piston as it comes up, and when the belt breaks it will hit the valves and destroy the engine.

My 1994 tracer won't start

Hi there,

Have a few questions.
You said you had fire. Is this true on all cylinders?

Is there any backfiring?

Pull the distributor cap and have someone crank it for you.
Is the rotor spinning?

Pull the plug on cylinder 1. Stuff a rag in the hole. Crank slowly until the rag pops out. The engine should be on or very close to Top Dead Center.
Which plug wire is the rotor facing (distibutor)?

I have my suspicions.
Get back to me with the results to confirm and proceed.
Mike
