Question about 2004 Cadillac CTS
The only items that could cause the starter to continue after the key is returned to the 'Run' position is either the starter solenoid hanging or a relay that may control it.
If the starter solenoid is hanging, the contact surfaces are probably damaged which may explain the poor starting.
In some cars, the solenoid is integrated into the starter (and replaced with it), others are a separate item.
If the car will start at all, go to a nearby auto parts store and have your computer scanned; it may contain info as to the defective part. If the car is non-op, call them to see if they rent scanners so you can obtain the error info yourself. It isn't difficult and the connector is not hard to find; in most cars the connector is located on the driver's side under the dash. It is a flattened 'D' shape and horizontal.
