Actually it's pretty easy. You have to remove the inner door panel and disconnect the old one and manuevor it out of the door then reverse the process to put the new one in.

If on a GM car the battery has been disconnect the windows may need to be reprogrammed
The following steps explain how to program the side door window regulator motors:

Automatic windows

the click you are hearing is the relay for the window motor. if it wont go up or down it is most likely the window motor that has gone bad and needs replaced.

Window do not work

I take it its an automatic window? If so you you can check the fuse for the automatic window or window motor, you can check the switch on the auto window itself, check the relay or replace the window motor.

Automatic window

Most likely the motor for the power window is worn out.
It's not that uncommon to replace these motors over time.
The motor is most likely over heating doing the job going one direction. Then, have to cool down to go the other direction. Hot and cold temperatures outside will play a factor on a worn-out window motor as well.
